Cemetery, New Mexico. Artist: Marsden Hartley (American, Lewiston, Maine 1877-1943 Ellsworth, Maine). Dimensions: 31 5/8 x 39 1/4 in. (80.3 x 99.7 cm). Date: 1924.While living in Berlin and Paris from 1923 to 1924, Hartley painted about thirty-five recollections of the New Mexico landscape that he had last seen when he visited Taos and Santa Fe in 1918-19. Remembering its sculptural topography, he evoked the natural wave rhythms in the land and sky. This scene is more detailed than most in the series and likely depicts the graveyard on the Taos Pueblo, located beside the ruins of the missionary church of San Geronimo, where converted native people were buried according to indigenous practices. Hartley typically painted from memory, in emulation of American artist Albert Pinkham Ryder (1847-1917), whom he admired and whose portrait he painted imaginatively in 1938. Autumn Color. Artist: Marsden Hartley (American, Lewiston, Maine 1877-1943 Ellsworth, Maine). Dimensions: 12 1/4 × 14 1/8 in. (31.1 × 35.9 cm). Date: ca. 1910.Hartley painted many of his small, early compositions over a colorful priming layer that generously shows through the upper strokes of pure, undiluted colors. In this composition, the deep purple priming layer was thinly painted with a wide bristle brush, which creates a feathery, semitransparent texture. In addition to influencing the overall tonality of the picture, it creates the impression of outlines around the individual brushstrokes, achieving dimension within the picture plane and infusing the composition with animated vibrancy. In the Simplon Pass John Singer Sargent (American, born Italy, 1856-1925). In the Simplon Pass, 1909. Translucent watercolor and touches of opaque watercolor and wax resist with graphite underdrawing, sheet: 14 7/16 x 21 3/16 in. (36.7 x 53.8 cm). In the Simplon Pass is a later addition to Brooklyns collection. Portions of this watercolor, particularly the face and parasol shaft, are unfinished. Though Sargent at times left faces blank, an infrared image of the underdrawing reveals facial features (see image below), as well as details in the parasol. American Art 1909
