ISS035-E-030794 (25 April 2013) --- NASA astronaut Tom Marshburn (pictured in background), Expedition 35 Flight Engineer, performs the second of a two-day session of Taskboard and Tele-operations with R 2 onboard the International Space Station. R 2 is the dexterous humanoid robot that was carried up to the station by one of NASA's final shuttle flights in 2011. The goals for these activities were orientation and depth familiarization, individual hand grasp and hand-to-hand object transfer; and all were completed nominally. The Robonaut Tele-operation System is used to demonstrate the ability to effectively control Robonaut from the station. The research objective is to evaluate this control method in terms of its ability to perform tasks as well as measure the time necessary to complete the defined tasks. This capability will need to be developed to support future operations of Robonaut in the space environment as well as certain intravehicular activity situations.

iss056e181758 (9/21/2018) --- A view of the Japanese Experiment Module (JEM) Pressurized Module (JPM) aboard the International Space Station (ISS). The Japanese Experiment Module, or JEM, called Kibo -- which means "hope" in Japanese -- is Japan's first human space facility and enhances the unique research capabilities of the International Space Station. Kibo consists of several components: two research facilities -- the Pressurized Module and Exposed Facility; a Logistics Module; a Remote Manipulator System; and an Inter-Orbit Communication System unit. Kibo also has a scientific airlock through which experiments are transferred and exposed to the external environment of space.

ISS004-E-10170 (20 April 2002) --- Astronaut Carl E. Walz, Expedition Four flight engineer, wearing a Russian Sokol suit, is seated in the Soyuz 3 spacecraft that is docked to the International Space Station (ISS). The Expedition Four crew undocked the Soyuz 3 capsule from the nadir docking port of the Zarya module of the ISS at 4:16 a.m. (CDT) and flew a short distance down the station for a redocking to the Pirs docking compartment at 4:37 a.m. (CDT) over Central Asia. The move was in preparation for the arrival of the new Soyuz 4 capsule on April 27, 2002, and a three-man taxi crew, Commander Yuri Gidzenko, who was a member of the first resident crew of the ISS; Flight Engineer Roberto Vittori of the European Space Agency (ESA); and South African space flight participant Mark Shuttleworth.

ISS019-E-015912 (12 May 2009) --- Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Koichi Wakata, Expedition 19/20 flight engineer, works on the Combustion Integrated Rack (CIR) Multi-user Drop Combustion Apparatus (MDCA) in the Destiny laboratory of the International Space Station. Wakata removed and replaced one fuel reservoir, which required temporary opening the front end cap and removing the fuel supply bypass Quick Disconnect (QD).

STS98-E-5124 (11 February 2001) --- Cosmonaut Sergei K. Krikalev, Expedition One flight engineer representing the Russian Aviation and Space Agency, films activity in the Unity node, just outside the newly attached Destiny laboratory. The crews of Atlantis and the International Space Station on February 11 opened the Destiny laboratory and spent the first full day of what are planned to be years of work ahead inside the orbiting science and command center. Astronaut William M. (Bill) Shepherd (just out of frame here) opened the Destiny hatch, and he and Shuttle commander Kenneth D. Cockrell ventured inside at 8:38 a.m. (CST). Members of both crews went to work quickly inside the new module, activating air systems, fire extinguishers, alarm systems, computers and internal communications. The crew also continued equipment transfers from the shuttle to the station and filmed several scenes onboard the station using the IMAX camera. This scene was recorded with a digital still camera.

The shuttle version of the bike, deployed here on Discovery's mid deck, is called the ergometer and is one device that provides astronauts a chance to exercise while in space.

ISS020-E-021854 (18 July 2009) --- Astronauts Dave Wolf (right) and Tim Kopra (center) are suited and just about ready to exit the International Space Station's Quest airlock to begin the first of five scheduled spacewalks over the next several days. Astronaut Christopher Cassidy, foreground, assists Kopra with his backpack. Robonaut is a humanoid robot designed with the versatility and dexterity to manipulate hardware, work in high risk environments, and respond safely to unexpected obstacles. Robonaut is comprised of a torso with two arms and a head, and two legs with end effectors that enable the robot to translate inside the ISS by interfacing with handrails and seat track.
