This large drawing depicts a small plaster cast of a cupid that Paul Cézanne kept in his studio. Although the cast appears in a number of watercolors and drawings, and four of his paintings, this is an independent graphic study and was not meant as a preparatory drawing for a particular work. Cézanne explored the contours of the cupids pudgy form using layered pencil strokes that convey the animation of its dynamic pose. On the other side of the sheet is a study of the kind of drapery that appears in his paintings of the cupid sculpture. European Art ca. 1890

The drawing technique is palpably Correggesque, with reinforced contours full of movement and a sfumato effect of tone despite the use of hatching. The present study has been described as a "copy from memory" after Correggio, but it reveals such fundamental differences of conception with respect to Correggio's fresco (the goddess exhibits more compact bodily proportions, and is seated in a languid, entirely restful pose) that it seems an independent work. It may well be that the challenge of designing a Diana fresco cycle of his own in the small room at the Rocca Sanvitale in Fontanellato stimulated Parmigianino in this iconographic exercise. Th

Figure Studies (recto and verso) 1790-1825 England. In this double-sided study, Fuseli cleverly traced the same figure on opposite sides of the sheet, as if thinking in three dimensions. His nudes are mostly inspired by ancient sources, as in the hanging satyr with his arms raised (based on a famous Hellenistic sculpture of the flayed Marsyas), but Fuseli activates them with his dynamic line.Drawing the human figure dominated artistic training in Fuseliís day. While sketching from a live model was part of conventional practice, copying ancient Roman sculpture was equally important. Fuseliís exposure to an abundance of ancient sculpture during his years in Rome (1770ñ78) became a visual catalogue he drew upon throughout his life..
