The Adoration of the Magi. Artist: Giotto di Bondone (Italian, Florentine, 1266/76-1337). Dimensions: 17 3/4 x 17 1/4 in. (45.1 x 43.8 cm). Date: possibly ca. 1320.This picture--at once austere and tender--belongs to a series of seven showing the life of Christ. The masterly depiction of the stable, which is viewed from slightly below, and the columnar solidity of the figures are typical of Giotto, the founder of European painting. The impetuous action of the kneeling king, who picks up the Christ Child, and Mary's expression of concern translate the Biblical account into deeply human terms. As the sculptor Ghiberti declared (ca. 1450): "Giotto made art natural and gave it gentleness.". Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Saint John the Baptist in Prison Visited by Two Disciples 1455-1460 Italy. Giovanni di Paolo worked within the conservative artistic tradition of Siena, creating rich patterns and an intensely devotional mood in his paintings. Among his finest narrative works are these six panels, part of a series of twelve depicting the life of Saint John the Baptist, the kinsman and prophet of Christ. Other panels from the series are scattered in European and American collections; they may originally have formed the doors of a shrine housing a relic of the saint. In the first of the Art Instituteís panels, the young Baptist enters the wilderness to live as a hermit; later he foretells Christís role as redeemer, is imprisoned, and is finally martyred at the request of Salome, the step-daughter of King Herod.. Tempera on panel . Giovanni di Paolo

Saint Zenobius Resuscitating a Dead Child Benozzo Gozzoli (Benozzo di Lese di Sandro) Italian These four panels were commissioned in the 1460s by the Alessandri family in Florence in order to update a Gothic style altarpiece painted 150 years earlier in the church of San Pier Maggiore. In them, the fifth-century bishop of Florence resuscitates a dead child on the square in front of San Pier Maggiore; the magician Simon Magus crashes to the ground at the feet of Emperor Nero when Saint Peter commands the demons who suspended him in midair to let him go; Saint Paul falls from his horse at the apparition of Christ; Totila, king of the Goths, asks the blessing of Saint Benedict. From his work with Fra Angelico and the sculptor Lorenzo Ghiberti, Gozzoli evolved a narrative style of great charm. For more information about these four paintings, including a reconstruction of the altarpiece, visit metmuseum.org.. Saint Zenobius Resuscitating a Dead Child. Benozzo Gozzoli (Benozzo di Lese di San
