The tiny bow, fine leather piping, and metallic painted button are pleasing elements which show the attention to detail. Bronze kid was used widely throughout the second half of the 19th century for women's shoes. The distinctive purplish brown tone with a metallic or iridescent sheen was produced by dyeing the leather with cochineal, a red dye produced by crushing the dried bodies of the insect Dactylopius coccusa.. When a lady ventured out of the house, boots were worn, and in the evening or when receiving guests more formally, heeled shoes were the norm. The enormous bow covering the instep was fashionable in the late 1860s and early 1870s. This example stands out for its high quality, attractive choice of contrasting materials, and good state of preservation. While the ankle strap style was standard for infants and young children, the decoration is taken directly from contemporary women's styles. This type of elaborate tiered bow, called the fenelon, was fashionable for women in late 1860s and 1870s. The central buckle was a common feature of the fenelon, and here the entire element has been scaled down to suit the diminutive shoe. Most children's shoes were made with a plain, flat sole; the formed sole incorporated here is usually found only on better women's shoes.
