Josef de Jaudenes y Nebot 1794 Gilbert Stuart American Born in Valencia, Spain, Josef de Jáudenes (1764-1818) arrived in New York City in 1785, serving first as an assistant to the Spanish minister and later as the Spanish chargé daffaires. Following his marriage to New York-born Matilda Stoughton (07.76) in 1794, Jáudenes commissioned Stuart to paint a pair of portraits commemorating their union. Stuart, who had returned from Ireland the previous year, drew on his knowledge of European Grand Manner portraiture in his elaborate depictions of the two sitters. Jáudenes, formally posed and richly attired, exemplifies the power and prosperity of the Spanish Empire, then at the height of its territorial expanse in the Americas. Livingston and Margaret Beekman's nine children, Edward is often referred to as "the jurist" to distinguish him from others of the same name in his extended and prolific family. The sobriquet also recalls Livingston's great skill and intellect as a lawyer, despite rough times in his political career. Livingston's joint term as U.S. District Attorney for New York and mayor (1801-4) ended in scandal; he began again, although encumbered with debt and charges against him, in New Orleans. George Washington and William Lee 1780 John Trumbull American In this portrait, Washington stands on a bluff above the Hudson River with William Lee, his enslaved valet, groom, and military aide, on horseback. Trumbull had served on Washingtons staff as an aide-de-camp early in the Revolutionary War. He painted this portrait from memory years later, when he was studying in London. It was the first authoritative depiction of Washington available in Europe, and was soon copied widely. The painting is also one of the best-known representations of Lee, depicted in a turban based on a European "orientalist" convention associated with Black figures.
