Remains of U.S. Army Air Corps Cpl. LaVerne Dirk Van Dyke, B-25 crew member, is laid to rest at the Zeeland Cemetery, Michigan, May 12, 2022. Van Dyke's great-niece, Beth Klomparen and great-nephew, Steve Klomparen accepted the ceremonial folded flag from Wright-Patterson Air Force Honor Guard 80 years after Van Dykes death. Remains of six crew members were found in a remote area of Papua New Guinea in 1998. The DNA analysis process to identify the remains took 20 years and another three years to bring Van Dyke home to his final resting place.

William Stroud and Mary Ann Smith, members of the Battle of the Bugle Association whose fathers died during the battle, placed a wreath at the Battle of the Bulge monument in Section 46, Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., Jan. 25, 2023. The ceremony commemorated the ending of the Battle of the Bulge on this date in 1945.The Battle of the Bulge, described by Winston Churchill as "undoubtedly the greatest American battle" of World War II, took place in the Ardennes Forest region of Belgium and Luxembourg from December 16, 1944, to January 25, 1945. The last major German counteroffensive on the Western Front, it ended in victory for Allied forces under the command of General Dwight D. Eisenhower but at great cost. Soldiers fought in brutal winter conditions, and the U.S. Army lost approximately 19,000 men (and suffered some 75,000 total casualties) in what became the United States' deadliest single World War II battle.

A Marine Corps honor guard holds the American flag over the casket of former astronaut and U.S. Senator John Glenn, who was buried with full military honors, at Arlington National Cemetery in Virginia on Thursday, April 6, 2017, the day on which he and his wife Annie were married in 1943. Glenn was the first American to orbit Earth on Feb. 20, 1962, in a five-hour flight aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft. In 1998, he broke another record by returning to space at the age of 77 on the Space Shuttle Discovery.

Born on October 2, 1923, in Quiet Dell, WV, Woody enlisted in the Marine Corps Reserve on May 26, 1943, and advanced to the rank of Chief Warrant Officer 4 before his retirement in 1969 after 17 years of service. During WWII, Woody served in New Caledonia, Guadalcanal, and Guam before landing in Iwo Jima where his actions earned him the Medal of Honor. At the time of his death on June 29, 2022, he was the last living World War II Medal of Honor recipient.

Dubbed "The Golden 13", he was one of the Navys first 13 African-American officers. Mr. White, 79, served in the Navy from 1943-1946, earning the rank of Lieutenant Junior Grade (LTJG). Following his commission at Naval Training Station, Great Lakes in 1944, he served as a Public Affairs Officer (PAO) at both Ninth Naval District and in Washington, D.C. A 1937 graduate of the University of Chicago Law School, White served as an Illinois Appellate Court Judge in the last years of his career. He returned to Great Lakes several times including for the dedication of the Golden 13 Recruit In-processing Center, June 5, 1987, and for the 50th anniversary celebration of the Golden 13s commissioning in 1994. The Red River Valley Fighter Pilots Association also known as River Rats flew hundreds of sorties of the Red River Valley, which was one of the most heavily defended areas during the Vietnam War. The memorial at Ramstein honors their legacy.

U.S. Navy Sailors assigned to U.S. Navy Region Hawaii and Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) conduct an interment ceremony for U.S. Navy Seaman 1st Class Maurice Spangler at the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, Honolulu, Hawaii, Jan. 4, 2023. Members of DPAA and attending family members paid their respects and honored the life of U.S. Navy Seaman 1st Class Maurice Spangler, who was assigned to the USS Oklahoma when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft during World War II. Spangler was accounted for on March 27, 2020, nearly 80 years after the attacks on Pearl Harbor.

The Coast Guard held a memorial service honoring the fallen members of Coast Guard Cutter Blackthorn and marked the anniversary of its collision with the motor vessel Capricorn.

DEDEDO, Guam (Sept. 11, 2022) - Joint Region Marianas leadership, Guam's Lt. Gov. Josh Tenorio, the Rotary Club of Northern Guam, and multiple other distinguished guests joined together at Two Lovers Point to observe the 21st Anniversary of 9/11. Guests and participants laid five wreaths in honor of the nearly 3,000 lives lost in the attack on the World Trade Center 21 years ago.

Soldiers from the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment (The Old Guard), the 3d U.S. Infantry Regiment Caisson Platoon, and the U.S. Army Band, Pershings Own conduct military funeral honors with funeral escort for U.S. Army 1st Lt. Myles W. Esmay in Section 36 of Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Va., Aug. 1, 2022. Esmay was killed on June 7, 1944 during the siege of Myitkyina, Burma in World War II. From the Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency (DPAA) press release: In the spring and summer of 1944, Esmay, an infantry engineer, was a member of Company B, 236th Engineer Combat Battalion, reinforcing the 5307th Composite Unit (Provisional), also known as Merrills Marauders. Esmays battalion arrived at the recently captured airfield in Myitkyina, Burma, on May 28, where they were tasked with holding the airfield and taking part in the siege of Myitkyina. On June 4, the battalion attacked Japanese forces at Namkwi village northwest of the airfield. The fighting lasted until June 7.

On Dec. 7, 1941, Jacobson was assigned to the battleship USS Oklahoma, which was moored at Ford Island, Pearl Harbor, when the ship was attacked by Japanese aircraft. The USS Oklahoma sustained multiple torpedo hits, which caused it to capsize quickly. The attack on the ship resulted in the deaths of 429 crew members, including Jacobson.To identify Jacobsons remains, scientists from DPAA used dental and anthropological analysis. NASA astronaut John Young was remembered in a ceremony at the Heroes and Legends exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex. The brief memorial took place on the afternoon of Jan. 11, 2018. Young died Jan. 5, 2018, in Houston at the age of 87. He was the only astronaut to fly in NASA's Gemini, Apollo and Space Shuttle Programs.

Corporal David B. Milano, MIA, was lost in action during the Korean War on December 2, 1950. After 71 years, he will be repatriated back to the United States and reunited with his family. Army Cpl. Charles E. Lee, 18, of Cincinnati, killed during the Korean War, was laid to rest on April 11, 2022, at Arlington National Cemetery, Arlington, Virginia. The Defense POW/MIA Accounting Agency accounted for Lee on June 14, 2021.In July 1950, Lee was a member of Company K, 3rd Battalion, 34th Infantry Regiment, 24th Infantry Division. He was reported missing in action on July 20 after his unit was forced to retreat from the vicinity of Taejon, South Korea. He was never found, nor were any remains recovered that could be identified as Lee.
