Harry Read, an 84-year-old Iwo Jima veteran was one of hundreds of veterans honored at a ceremony commemorating the 65th anniversary of the Battle of Iwo Jima at the National Museum of the Marine Corps in Triangle, Va., Feb. 19, 2010. In February 1945, the United States launched its first assault against the Japanese at Iwo Jima, resulting in some of the fiercest fighting of the war.

Sangamon County Sheriff Jack Campbell talks about his department's Sgt. Jason Boesdorfer and the mental health struggles of many law enforcement officers. Campbell thanked Mylas Copeland, the director of the Peacekeepers Ride, and those supporting the annual event. The annual Peacekeepers ride starts at the Illinois National Guard headquarters on Camp Lincoln in Springfield. This year the ride, held on July 17, honored Illinois Army National Guard Col. (ret.) James Smith and Sangamon County Sheriff Department Sgt. Jason Boesdorfer, both of whom died in May. Smith served in the Illinois Army National Guard for 31 years retiring as the ILARNG Chief of Staff in 2008. He then went on to serve as the Illinois Department of Military Affairs Chief of Staff from 2008 until his death on May 11, 2022.

The Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam, commonly known as the LTTE or the Tamil Tigers, is a separatist organization formerly based in northern Sri Lanka. Founded in May 1976 by Velupillai Prabhakaran, it waged a violent secessionist campaign that sought to create Tamil Eelam, an independent state in the north and east of Sri Lanka. This campaign evolved into the Sri Lankan Civil War, which was one of the longest running armed conflicts in Asia until the LTTE was defeated by the Sri Lankan Armed Forces in May 2009.

Carver McGriff, a U.S. Army Veteran of the 90th Infantry Division sits for an interview with the Armed Forces Network "AFN Europe", June 4, 2022, during the 90th Infantry Division Tribute and 78th Liberation Commemoration Ceremony, at Le Plessis-Lastelle, France. McGriff was sent to England where he was assigned to a machine gun squad in the 90th Infantry Division and was held in reserve during the Invasion of Normandy. McGriff said, "it was an honor to be part of what happened in Normandy." After being wounded, McGriff was captured by the Germans July 7, 1944. He was given medical treatment and was rescued by an American unit nearly one month later on Aug. 4.

PEARL HARBOR (July 5, 2022) - New Zealands Māori Cultural Group performs during a reception aboard Royal New Zealand Navy auxiliary oiler replenishment ship HMNZS Aotearoa (A 11). The reception was hosted by New Zealand Consulate General, Hawaii, Mr. Mike Ketchen and Commanding Officer of Aotearoa, Cmdr. Dave Barr, for New Zealands Rim of the Pacific (RIMPAC) 2022 partner nations. Twenty-six nations, 38 ships, four submarines, more than 170 aircraft and 25,000 personnel are participating in RIMPAC from June 29 to Aug. 4 in and around the Hawaiian Islands and Southern California. General Hyon Yong-chol was a senior North Korean military officer and Workers' Party of Korea (WPK) politician who served briefly as defence minister. South Korea's National Intelligence Service reported on May 12, 2015, that Hyon was purged and publicly executed near the end of April 2015 at Kanggon Military Training Area near Pyongyang. It was reported that he was executed - with a four-barreled light antiaircraft gun - for insubordination and sleeping during formal military rallies.

Senior General Than Shwe (born 3 February 1933) is a Burmese military leader and politician who was chairman of the State Peace and Development Council (SPDC) from 1992 to 2011. During the period, he held key positions of power including commander-in-chief of the Myanmar Armed Forces (Tatmawdaw) and head of Union Solidarity and Development Association. In 2011, he officially resigned from his position as head of state, in favor of his hand-picked successor, Thein Sein.

Francis Raout gets ready to deliever his speech at the Italian Commemoration Ceremony for the B-17 of the Aguille des Glaciers, September 3, Courmayeur, Italy. Raout was a Member of the Alpine Infantry who were the first to find the B-17 wreckage in 1947. Lt. Col. Rebecca Sonkiss, commander, 15 Airlift Squadron and 12 others from Joint Base Charleston participated in two commemoration ceremonies for the crew of B-17 #43-39388 in Courmayeur, Italy and Bourg Saint Maurice on September 3rd and 4th. The B-17 crew was from the 15th Troop Carrier Squadron which is now the 15th AS. Dignitaries and family members of the crew were in attendance. The entire eight man crew was lost after their aircraft went down on Aiguille des Glaciers, one of the rugged peaks in the French Alps. It is near Mont Blanc, the highest point in Europe and close to the French-Italian border.
