Armor of Henry Herbert (1534-1601), Second Earl of Pembroke ca. 1585-86 Made in the Royal Workshops at Greenwich This armor was made for Henry Herbert (1534-1601) in the royal workshops at Greenwich. Originally, it consisted of a garniture for field and tournament. The present burgonet (helmet) and falling buffe (face defense) were designed for light cavalry and infantry use. Among the garnitures missing elements are two close helmets and several reinforcing pieces for the tournament, similar to those preserved with the Cumberland garniture also in the Metropolitan Museum's collection (acc. no. 32.130.6a-y).Herberts antiquarian and heraldic interests are reflected in the armors decoration, which traces the lineage of the great Pembroke family through its complex coat of arms, consisting of twenty-two quarterings. Dimensions: H. as mounted approximately 32 in. (81.28 cm); Wt. 21 lb. 7 oz. (9724 g). Date: ca. 1505-10.This armor is a rare example of the fluted, or "Maximilian," style in its earliest stages. The armor was made in either Mühlau or in neighboring Innsbruck soon after the Emperor Maximilian I (1459-1519) established his court armor-making workshop in Innsbruck in 1504. Little is known of its maker, Christian Schreiner the Younger. Few of his works survive, and this is the most complete.A strong Italian influence is apparent in this armor and in armors of the Innsbruck/Mühlau school in general. They are characterized by full rounded forms and sparing use of surface ornament as opposed to the purely German Gothic style typified by slender proportions and pierced openwork.Particularly distinctive are the gracefully bold mitten gaun

Cocked Hat and Fly Whisk for Coronation. Native Chief gets Abbey Invite.Carrying a fly-whisk, the distinguishing mark of his rank, Paramount Chief Mwanawina III of Barotseland, Northern Rhodesia, will wear a uniform like this at the Coronation of Queen Elizabeth. A seat has been reserved for the Chief, who is pictured in the outfit at Westminster Abbey. The uniform includes cocked hat trimmed half military and half naval style; a gold laced coat, gauntlets sword and tassels. A new uniform, precisely the same as this is being made in London for the Occassion. The original uniform is said to have been given to Chief Lewanika - Chief Mwanawina's father - by the then Colonial Secretary Mr. Joseph Chamberlain, in the early 1900's. February 25, 1953.

Armor (Morohada-Nugi-D Gusoku) 17th century Japanese This armor is a rare example of an en suite armor of the morohada-nugi-d gusoku type (with a cuirass that simulates a bare-chested torso) from the early Edo period (17th century). Warfare in Japan changed dramatically throughout the 16th century, with the introduction of firearms and the utilization of larger contingents of troops. This necessitated significant changes in the design of armor worn on the battlefield, including the introduction of bullet resistant materials and creation of more distinctive armor forms that would aid in making individual troops more recognizable in the chaos of battle. The morohada-nugi-d gusoku is one type of so-called “modern armor” (tsei-gusoku), developed during this transitional period. Wearing a cuirass in the form of a bare-chested torso was not only a means of distinguishing oneself on the battlefield, it was also designed to intimidate the enemy.. Armor (Morohada-Nugi-D Gusoku). Portrait of a Wounded KNIL Soldier.The Dutch dubbed this West-African soldier Kees Pop’, an archetypal Dutch name, because they were unable to pronounce his original name. Many soldiers were recruited from the former slave centre of Elmina (now Ghana) into the Dutch East Indies Army (KNIL) to fight the rebellious Indonesians. Pop’ signed on in 1869 for a twelve-year tour of duty; he fought in the Aceh War and was decorated for his service. Isaac Israels portrayed him with his medals in the Netherlands just before his passage back to Africa.
