Inside the Neil Armstrong Operations and Checkout Building high bay at NASAs Kennedy Space Center in Florida, a new overhead crane was installed, while the old Lypta 2.5-ton crane is lowered by crane on March 15, 2021. The new overhead crane will be used to process Orion for the agencys first crewed mission, Artemis II. Teams from American Crane and Equipment Corp. are replacing the Lypta crane with the new Artemis-rated 30-ton crane. The new crane has enhanced controls and additional safety features that will allow for micro movements to within 1/100th of an inch. Operators will use the crane to lift Orion once the crew and service modules are mated.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - Workers in the Orbiter Processing Facility help prepare the body flap for lifting prior to installation on the orbiter Discovery. The body flap is an aluminum structure consisting of ribs, spars, skin panels and a trailing edge assembly. It thermally shields the three main engines during entry and provides pitch control trim during landing approach. Discovery is being processed for launch on the first Return to Flight mission, STS-114.

KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. - One of the blanket sewing machines used on Thermal Protection System materials has been returned to the TPS facility. It was moved to the RLV Hangar at NASA Kennedy Space Center after the 2004 hurricanes damaged the upper floor, where soft material was processed, of the TPS facility. While the TPS facility was being repaired, normal work activity was done in the hangar.

VANDENBERG AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. - The shipping container is removed from around the fairing for NASA's Orbiting Carbon Observatory-2 mission, or OCO-2, in the NASA Building 836 high bay at Vandenberg Air Force Base in California. The fairing will protect OCO-2 during launch aboard a United Launch Alliance Delta II rocket from Space Launch Complex 2 in July. OCO-2 will collect precise global measurements of carbon dioxide in the Earth's atmosphere and provide scientists with a better idea of the chemical compound's impacts on climate change. Scientists will analyze this data to improve our understanding of the natural processes and human activities that regulate the abundance and distribution of this important atmospheric gas.
