Indian painting has a very long tradition and history in Indian art. The earliest Indian paintings were the rock paintings of pre-historic times, the petroglyphs as found in places like Bhimbetka, some of them from before 5500 BC. India's Buddhist literature is replete with examples of texts which describe palaces of kings and the aristocratic class embellished with paintings, but the paintings of the Ajanta Caves are the most significant of the few survivals. Smaller scale painting in manuscripts was probably also practised in this period, though the earliest survivals are from the medieval period. Mughal painting represented a fusion of the Persian miniature with older Indian traditions, and from the 17th century its style was diffused across Indian princely courts of all religions, each developing a local style. Company paintings were made for British clients under the British raj, which from the 19th century also introduced art schools along Western lines, leading to modern Indian

Although the illustration appears to be somewhat genericit could represent an enthronement setting for any given rulerthe text reveals that it actually illustrates an episode from the reign of the Sasanian king Khusraw (ruled 590-628) as recounted in the Shāhnāma. The two couples reach a foreign city where they make their home, from a Tuti-nama (Tales of a Parrot): Thirty-third Night, c. 1560. Mughal India, court of Akbar (reigned 1556-1605). Gum tempera, ink, and gold on paper; overall: 20.3 x 14 cm (8 x 5 1/2 in.); painting only: 11.5 x 10.1 cm (4 1/2 x 4 in.). Two pairs of lovers cross the bridge that leads to the gates of a new city. They have fled here together to live out the rest of their lives peacefully away from the machinations that would have otherwise kept them apart. Above the intricately patterned city walls, three men witness the groups arrival.

Love Scenes Indian. Love Scenes, 1660-1680. Opaque watercolor and gold on paper, 8 x 6 1/8in. (20.3 x 15.6cm). Indian artists produced a small body of erotic imagery for their royal patrons, usually in the same courtly styles used for other subjects. This scene of lovemaking comes from a series that is painted in the bold, minimalist style of the Malwa region. Seventeenth-century Malwa paintings almost always feature figures inside a small pavilion, with flat, decorative elements to one side and below and little or no sense of spatial depth. They are like simple stage productions, but painted with a sophisticated palette that makes much use of subtle juxtapositions of color. Here, the hot red of the bed pops against the cool blue of the interior, which in turn glows against the black of the night. The exuberant flowers might reflect the blossoming of the couples passion. Details such as the inlaid stars and figures with very small elliptical pupils are characteristic of works attributed to Mirza 'Ali, the son of the master painter Sultan Muhammad. The youngest son of Shah Jahan wears a stylish jama not unlike the example on view on the adjacent wall, and the fabric pattern recalls the poppies on the textile hanging above the display case to the left. He would meet his death in 1661 after being imprisoned and executed by order of his ambitious older brother, Emperor Alamgir, who determined that there be no rivals to his claim to the throne. The exceptionally soft treatment of his youthful features even at such small scale is testament to the skill of the imperial Mughal painters.

Nasir ud-din Muhammad Humayun (Persian: ; full title: Al-Sultan al-'Azam wal Khaqan al-Mukarram, Jam-i-Sultanat-i-haqiqi wa Majazi, Sayyid al-Salatin, Abu'l Muzaffar Nasir ud-din Muhammad Humayun Padshah Ghazi, Zillu'llah; 7 March 1508 - 22 February 1556) was the second Mughal Emperor who ruled present day Afghanistan, Pakistan, and parts of northern India from 1530-1540 and again from 1555-1556. Like his father, Babur, he lost his kingdom early, but with Persian aid, he eventually regained an even larger one. On the eve of his death in 1556, the Mughal empire spanned almost one million square kilometers. He succeeded his father in India in 1530, while his half-brother Kamran Mirza, who was to become a rather bitter rival, obtained the sovereignty of Kabul and Lahore, the more northern parts of their father's empire. Yahya ibn Mahmod al-Wasiti was a 13th-century Arab Islamic artist. Al-Wasiti was born in Wasit in southern Iraq. He was noted for his illustrations of the Maqam of al-Hariri. Maqama (literally 'assemblies') are an (originally) Arabic literary genre of rhymed prose with intervals of poetry in which rhetorical extravagance is conspicuous. The 10th century author Badi' al-Zaman al-Hamadhani is said to have invented the form, which was extended by al-Hariri of Basra in the next century. Both authors' maqamat center on trickster figures whose wanderings and exploits in speaking to assemblies of the powerful are conveyed by a narrator. Manuscripts of al-Hariri's Maqamat, anecdotes of a roguish wanderer Abu Zayd from Saruj, were frequently illustrated with miniatures.

In this case, Chinese influence can be seen in the arrangement of figures on a horizontal groundline set against a neutral, undefined background; in the identity and sinuous style of the flowering prunus tree that braces the princess; and in the material used for the painting surface. The drawing pertains to the chapter dealing with devices for raising water from pools or wells using animals. In this case, the donkey moves around the pole with the lever arm attached to its neck; its motion causes the wheels to rotate, thus raising the large ladle out of the water at regular intervals.
