Gilt-leather wall hangings (part of a set) ca. 1650-70 Possibly by De Gecroonde Son Dutch Use of painted leather panels for the decoration of walls was long practiced in Spain. The first workshop to produce such decorative hangings in The Netherlands was established in Amsterdam by 1611. Typically Dutch is the use of molds to press a pattern in relief into the leather creating particularly sumptuous effects. Although generally known as gilt leather, silver leaf was applied to the prepared calf hides which were then covered by a yellow varnish making it resemble gilding. In the context of the commemoration of the establishment of the Dutch East India Company (VOC), the Rijksmuseum Amsterdam Schiphol showed a number of works that could be seen in the main building at the exhibition from 8 April 2003 to 4 August 2003 The Dutch encounter with Asia, 1600-1950. Sculptures and paintings in the Northern Gallery at Petworth House in West Sussex, United Kingdom. Petworth is a late 17th-century Grade I listed country house, rebuilt in 1688 by Charles Seymour, 6th Duke of Somerset, and altered in the 1870s to the design of the architect Anthony Salvin. Petworth is famous for its extensive art collection which include severals painting by Turner, Gainsborough and Titian. It also has an expansive deer park, landscaped by Capability Brown.

Cannon (Bastard Culverin) Made for Henry II, King of France ca. 1550 French Cast for Henry II of France (r. 1547-1559), this is one of very few royal pieces of ordnance known to survive from the French Renaissance, and among them it is one of the largest and also most profusely decorated examples. Of a type known as a couleuvrine btarde (a bastard culverin), it is the third largest of the six calibers Henry prescribed in 1552 for French royal ordnance.Beside the quality of execution and its remarkable state of preservation, the striking ornamentation of much of the gun's surface with royal emblems is distinctly French. Marking the apogee of a style that appears to have first emerged under Louis XII (r. 1498-1515), it includes cryptic emblems that were so typical of Renaissance court culture and very much favored in France.
