Date: ca. 1835.Rene Lacôte was the most well-known maker of the guitar in France during the early nineteenth century. His guitars were endorsed by several famous performers including Fernando Sor, Ferdinando Carulli, Zani de Ferranti, and others. This guitar has a spruce top with black-and-white striped edging and soundhole ring. The two-piece back and ribs are made of rosewood. A six-single course guitar with ebony fingerboard and 17 T-frets. The mechanism for the tuners are housed within the headstock, a design by Lacôte that is quite elegant. The guitar bears a label with the signature of Fernando Sor. Several surviving instruments by Lacôte are similarly signed, suggesting that this was an endorsement from the famous player. From the plugged holes in the peghead, it would appear that this instrument was originally made as an eleven string guitar, a design popular in Andalusia during the last half of the nineteenth century. It was undoubtedly converted to its present six-string configuration prior to its acquisition by Segovia. In addition to the label of Manuel Ramírez, a repair label was placed inside by Santos Hernández in 1922. At the time this instrument was made, Hernández was the forman of the Ramirez workshop, and was probably responsible for its construction. The two-piece back is made of Brazilian rosewood; the two-piece top is of spruce.Andrés Segovia launched his career playing this guitar; he concertized and recorded with it from 1912 to 1937 and played it at his United States debut in New York's Town Hall in 1929. He became its president in 1806 and won a court appointment. The striking, almost architectural decor of this instrument typifies the maker's early work. Knee levers lift the dampers and a knob over the nameplate operates a mute, or moderator. The instrument has a five-octave range (sixty-one notes) and is double-strung in the bass and middle registers and triple-strung in the treble. The piano is of the type that was customary in Mozarts day.
