The Shade of the Prophet Samuel Invoked by King Saul and Conjured by the Witch of Endor Antoine Coypel French ca. 1695 Antoine Coypel was one of the leading French painters in the generation that straddled the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. He was influenced by Charles Le Brun and the art of Italy, but also by the manner and colorism of Rubens. He received many commissions from the King as well as from Philippe II, Duc dOrléans, the future Regent and held prestigious appointments including that of the Director of the Académie Royale and the First Painter to the King.This large, spontaneously executed sheet, full of brio and pentimenti, highlights the artists capacity for invention and taste for the theatrical. Date: ca. 1628-30.This powerful study of hands, drawn after a live model, was used by Crespi for several of his fresco portraits of Carthusian monks at the Chartreuse of Garegnano, in the outskirts of Milan. Repertory drawings such as this one that could be referenced in the making of several figures helped the artist complete the large frescoes in a short amount of time, between 1628 and 1630. The decoration of the Milan Chartreuse, Crespi's most celebrated achievement as a painter, occurred right before his sudden death in 1630. The Agony in the Garden 1823-24 Eugène Delacroix French Delacroixs first official religious commission was a painting for the church of Saint-Paul-Saint-Louis in Paris. This study establishes the basic composition: Christ props himself up against a rock, bows his head, and raises his hand to acknowledge acceptance of his fate, announced by the mourning angels in the upper right. Fall of the Giants 1638 Bartolomeo Coriolano Italian A contemporary biographer of Guido Reni reported that the artist, famed for his depictions of devout saints and beautiful women, created this composition in order to show that he was the equal of any master in depicting the muscular male nude. Reni often worked with the printmaker Coriolano, who produced eighteen chiaroscuro woodcuts after Reni's designs. Reni drew inspiration from Giulio Romano's frescoed room in the Palazzo Te in Mantua, where the viewer is surrounded by images of huge, cartoonlike Giants crushed beneath crumbling mountains and fallen columns.. The Deliverance of Cybele, an Allegory of the Seasons n.d. Gabriel François Doyen French Doyen was one of the most promising young artists of the generation that came of age in the last decades before the French Revolution, a period when a vigorous neo-baroque style was gaining ground against the waning popularity of the rococo. His submissions to the biennial Salons held at the Louvre tended to be few in number but ambitious in format and intent, typically accompanied by lengthy textual explanations. This large, painterly Allegory of the Seasons was the first drawing he chose to exhibit. The goddess Cybele, identified by her turreted crown and lion-drawn chariot, represents Earth, but also fertility and vegetation. In Doyens image, she is rendered powerless, beset by the ice and frost of winter. The arrival of Jupiter Pluvius, the god of the rains, with his outstretched arms and flowing hair, signals the return of spring, or "Cybeles deliverance." The drawing was commissioned by the
