Eighteenth-century artists sometimes portrayed people as mythological characters to highlight their virtues. Girodet inverted this convention to defame Miss Lange. Danae was one of the mortals loved by the Greek god Zeus, who transformed himself into a shower of gold and fell upon her. Girodet shows Miss Lange greedily catching the gold coins. This painting, titled Death of Procris, is by Pietro di Cosimo (also known as Piero di Lorenzo), an Italian Renaissance painter1462-1521. This work dates to between 1500 and 1510. The painting is unsigned, but Pietro is known for not signing his works, and now hangs in the National Gallery, in London. It is also called 'A Satyr Mourning Over a Nymph.' The National Gallery prefers to title it 'A Mythological Subject,' as the real theme is disputed. Whatever and whoever the figures represent, they are from Greek mythology.
