Plate 1773 Sèvres Manufactory French This plate comes from a service presented to Queen Maria Carolina, wife of Ferdinand IV of Naples. The initials CL are painted in the center of the plate because Maria Carolina, an older sister of Marie-Antoinette, was known as Charlotte Louise in France.. Plate 205457. Commissioned in 1877 by John W. (1831-1902) and Marie Louise Hungerford (1843-1928) Mackay, the dinner service for twenty-four consisted of over 1,250 pieces. A poor Irish immigrant with little education, John W. Mackay became one of the wealthiest men in America when he and three partners, James Fair, James Flood, and William OBrien, struck a silver deposit known as "The Big Bonanza" at Nevadas Comstock Lode in 1873. During a visit to the mine, Marie Louise asked her husband for a silver dinner service "made by the finest silversmith in the country." Her husband responded, "You shall have it. I like the notion of eating off silver brought straight from the Comstock." Creamware .Saucer (part of a set) decorated ca. 1725-30 Meissen Manufactory German The ensemble (1982.60.248-.251) is an assembled one, although one cup and saucer, both painted with riverscapes, are a fairly close match and are by the same hand. The xecond cup, also by the same artist, depicts an architectural landscape on one side, a winter skating scene opposite. On the saucer is a garden pavilion painted by a different artist. One cover is a modern replacement.The porcelain is of the Böttger type. Similar cups and saucers are dated 1720-25 by Rückert,1 but a slightly later date is suggested here by the incipient romanticism of the decoration. Commissioned in 1877 by John W. (1831-1902) and Marie Louise Hungerford (1843-1928) Mackay, the dinner service for twenty-four consisted of over 1,250 pieces. A poor Irish immigrant with little education, John W. Mackay became one of the wealthiest men in America when he and three partners, James Fair, James Flood, and William OBrien, struck a silver deposit known as "The Big Bonanza" at Nevadas Comstock Lode in 1873.
