Diaphanorama of a naval battle. Diaphanoramas are particularly suited to scenes with a lot of spatial depth, such as landscapes and naval battles. Interiors were also popular subjects. This naval battle consists of three glass plates painted on both sides, which the maker has effectively used to evoke a strong sense of recession.

Date: Probably late 18th or early 19th century.Soga Shohaku was a prominent, if eccentric, figure in Kyoto during the second half of the eighteenth century, when he developed the style that set him apart from painters of the Kano, Nanga, and Shijo schools. Here, he has depicted the standard ink landscape theme of Eight Views, with a local twist. Each of the moments celebrated in the Chinese theme has been matched with a place and season from the area of Lake Biwa, Japan's largest and most fabled lake, just east of the mountains that form the eastern border of the ancient capital at Kyoto. His contemporary and local interpretation is rendered in a style of ink painting that knowingly refers to the work of painters of the Soga school, who were active during the late fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. James McNeill Whistler credited Japanese art with having a profound impact on his own artistic activities, which included painting, printmaking, and interior decoration. Indeed, the Japanese cultivation of beauty in all aspects of material life informed his own art for art’s sake” philosophy. This sensibility led Whistler to shift from naturalistic representation in his pictures toward more abstract, evocative arrangements of color and form in the late 1860s. In this image of London’s Battersea district across the Thames, the asymmetrical composition and emphasis on the misty atmospheric effects of early light both reveals the artist’s debt to Japanese art and transforms the urban industrial landscape into a thing of poetic beauty. Mountainous Landscape 1576-1631 Tobias Verhaecht Netherlandish The Netherlandish landscapist Tobias Verhaecht crossed the Alps on his way to Italy during the 1590s. This journey clearly left a lasting impression, as monumental mountain ranges and valleys would form a quintessential element in his work throughout his career. It is doubtful, however, that the fanciful rock formations depicted in this drawing have an actual equivalent in reality. The composition is likely to have sprung largely from Verhaechts imagination, rather than direct observation. Undeniably, the influential Alpine landscapes of Pieter Bruegel the Elder (1525-69) formed an important source of inspiration. The landscape is executed in vigorous, broad pen strokes and loosely applied brown and blue washes. Verhaecht paid little attention to detail; note for example the four watermills, broadly sketched along the riverbanks. Trees, scattered around the landscape, are barely discernable from the fantastic rocks, as the
