The Ostend doctrine. Practical Democrats carrying out the principle - The Ostend Manifesto, advocated by American minister to England James Buchanan, minister to Spain Pierre Soule, and John Y. Mason, minister to France, urged the purchase or (if necessary) seizure of Cuba from Spain. The manifesto was issued in October 1854. Here Buchanan is singled out for attack for his role in the controversy. He is surrounded by four unkempt toughs seeking to rob him of his coat, hat, watch, and money. Their demands include quotations from the manifesto (given in bold below), which is posted on the fence

The Pullman porter's "kick" - Illustration shows a thin, tattered "Pullman Sleeping Car Porter" holding a piece of paper "Tips Daily Average on each Trip" which shows a 70% reduction in tips between 1890 and 1900, at the bottom it states "Pullman Porter's Labor Union." He is appealing to the president of the railroad company to become a salaried employee. Starting with the California Gold Rush in the late 19th century, the United Statesparticularly the West Coast statesimported large numbers of Chinese migrant laborers. Early Chinese immigrants worked as gold miners, and later on large labor projects, such as the building of the First Transcontinental Railroad. Chinese migrant workers encountered considerable prejudice in the United States, especially by the people who occupied the lower layers in white society, because Chinese 'coolies' were used as a scapegoat for depressed wage levels by politicians and labor leaders. In the 1870s and 1880s various legal discriminatory measures were taken against the Chinese. These laws, in particular the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882, were aimed at restricting further immigration from China. The laws were later repealed by the Chinese Exclusion Repeal Act of 1943.

Seventh Ward Beggars 1839 Henry R. Robinson American This satire criticizes President Andrew Jacksons decision in 1832 to dissolve the Bank of the United States. From 1833, the president and his cabinet distributed government funds through "pet" state banks and, according to this print, used the system to solicit kickbacks. Kneeling bankers here implore a king-like Jackson, who holds a scepter and sits on bales of surplus cash, for funds. New York bankers were affected by this new arrangement, and the citys Seventh Ward Bank appears in the background. The man dressed in a brown suit is identified as "a spy" for the Courier & Enquirer, a New York newspaper that reported Washington political news in detail and whose editor turned against Jacksonian populism..
