Madame Charles Maurice de Talleyrand Périgord (1761-1835) ca. 1804 baron François Gérard French Gérard, a student of David, was official painter to Empress Joséphine; the sitter was a celebrated beauty, captured in Vigée Lebruns youthful portrait from 1783, also at The Met. In 1802, her affair with the statesman Talleyrand was sufficiently scandalous that Napoleon demanded they marry; neither was particularly faithful, however, and, by the time this portrait was painted two years later, they had separated. Thus, this is not a pendant to The Mets two portraits of Talleyrand. Gérards brush revels in details of the highly fashionable interior: contrasting sun and fire light from the novel chimney installed beneath a window, the diaphanous dress, and the paisley shawl—a modish accessory, but also a nod to the sitters birth near Pondicherry, in colonial India.. He apprenticed as a wood carver, then did stucco work during reconstruction of the burned-out Frederiksborg Castle in eastern Denmark. Meanwhile, he intermittently studied painting at the Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. After extensive travel throughout southern Europe, he settled in Germany. Though Rosenstand attempted a painting career, he found his true niche as a magazine and book illustrator. His main subject was middle-class urban life—think men in top hats and ladies in silk. His greater contributions to art, however, were his intimate portraits and figure studies, such as this watercolor.

Date: 1914.In 1899, Cecilia Beaux was heralded by her esteemed colleague William Merritt Chase as "not only the greatest living woman painter, but the best that has ever lived." Today, such a qualified accolade may be interpreted as a backhanded compliment; Beaux herself rejected the term "woman painter." The Met was an early supporter of the artist's career, acquiring this depiction of her favorite niece, Ernesta Drinker, soon after it was produced. One critic praised "the skillful handling of the whites of the costume and sofa and . expression of animation and the charm of youth." Date: 1906.Sorolla's wife Clotilde was his confidant, traveling companion, bookkeeper (or in his words, "my Treasury Minister"), and muse. In this portrait, set in their Madrid home, she poses as a Spanish beauty wearing a striking evening dress. Behind her is Sorolla's painting of a female saint, made during the first months of their marriage in 1888. At far right the artist depicted the edge of another canvas--a conceit recalling the work of seventeenth-century master and fellow countryman Velázquez. The present picture hung prominently in Sorolla's wildly successful 1909 exhibition at the Hispanic Society of America in New York, where the Metropolitan immediately acquired it. The caption for this illustration reads: Sitting with the sleeping dragon's head on her knee. The tale is Serbian - a king had three sons and a daughter, whom he overly protected. One day he allows his daughters to go with his sons and a dragon comes and takes her and guards her, with its head on her lap as seen here. The youngest son is the one who, in the end, kills the dragon and rescues her. The illustration is from a 1921 book on Serbian myths and legends.

Carolus-Duran encouraged his students to search for artistic role models among the great masters of the past. Beckwith suggests his admiration for the Renaissance painter Paolo Veronese (1528-1588) by using a print of the lower portion of his Madonna in Glory with Saint Sebastian and Other Saints (Church of San Sebastiano, Venice) as a backdrop for this portrait sketch. Beckwith's use of Italian art signifies his own sophistication and erudition, and it may also suggest that the young woman (model Minnie Clark) is a modern Madonna. James Abbott McNeill Whistler (July 10, 1834 July 17, 1903) was an American-born, British-based artist. Averse to sentimentality and moral allusion in painting, he was a leading proponent of the credo 'art for art's sake'. His famous signature for his paintings was in the shape of a stylized butterfly possessing a long stinger for a tail. The symbol was apt, for it combined both aspects of his personality-his art was characterized by a subtle delicacy, while his public persona was combative. Finding a parallel between painting and music, Whistler titled many of his paintings 'arrangements', 'harmonies', and 'nocturnes', emphasizing the primacy of tonal harmony. His most famous painting is Whistler's Mother (1871), the revered and oft parodied portrait of motherhood. Whistler influenced the art world and the broader culture of his time with his artistic theories and his friendships with leading artists and writers.

He made about fifty paintings depicting them, as well as numerous drawings and prints, including a suite of color lithographs, Elles, which was completed the year before this painting.
