Albrecht Dürer intently studied human proportions, analyzing the way anatomical form was portrayed both in antiquity and in the work of other Renaissance artists. Here, the standard bearers tight clothing accentuates his musculature. His stance displays classical contrapposto, in which one leg is slightly bent while the other bears the bodys full weight, producing a sinuous and graceful line. Contrapposto, literally meaning “counterpose,” was a fundamental formal tool for Renaissance artists, who took inspiration from ancient Greek and Roman statuary. European Art ca. 1500

Melencolia I 1514 Albrecht Dürer German The winged figure in Melencolia I has inspired many readings over its long history, although her ties to mathematical knowledge are often highlighted. Many of her accoutrements are borrowed from medieval and Renaissance allegories of geometry that personify it as a woman working at a table surrounded by tools. Perhaps most notably, a truncated rhombohedron looms large in the middle distance, dividing the foregrounda scene replete with the detritus of measurementfrom the limitless background of a placid sea that vanishes into the horizon, presumably the type of natural territory the geometer purports to measure.. Hercules and the Hydra; wielding a torch he attacks the winged, multi-headed Hydra in rocky landscape, a hawk attacks a heron in the sky ca. 1500-1520 Cristofano di Michele Martini (Il Robetta) Italian The son of the God Jupiter and the mortal Alcmene, Hercules (Herakles in Greek) possessed a superhuman strength that allowed him to defeat tyrants and destroy monsters. As the legendary founder of Florence, he appeared on the city seal already in the thirteenth century. In 1460, Pollaiuolo painted three canvases depicting the labors of Hercules for the great hall of the Medici palace in Florence, the first large-scale mythological decorations of the Renaissance. Robetta's engraving seems to record one of these lost works, in which Hercules battles the Hydra with a torch. By cauterizing the Hydra's wounds with fire, the hero was able to prevent two new heads from sprouting each time one was cut off. All the Talents April 18, 1807 Thomas Rowlandson Created as a frontispiece to a satirical poem, Rowlandson's etching is based on a drawing by Barrett, the author. The satire responds to the recent fall of a British parliamentary coalition known as the "Broad Bottom Administration," or "All the Talents." Its diverse membership is symbolized by a creature with the head and tail of a monkey, but human body, wearing a judge's wig beneath the mitre of an episcopal bishop and holding a Catholic crosier. Its suit mixes a lawyer's bands with a laced coat, ragged breeches, single shoe, and a French jackboot. The burning papers below refer to the Administration's negotiations with France, and its lost sinecures and patronages. A musket labeled "Army," fired with its right foot, causes volumes labeled "Magna Charta" and "Coronation Oath" to fall from a shelf. With a quill, the animal points to new financial projects, the slip of paper "Country dances" below alluding to the Chancellor of the Exche
