King Solomon Receiving the Queen of Sheba 1515-1520 Belgium. This scene and that of King David Receiving the Cistern Water are particularly fine examples of the decorative style practiced in Antwerp by a group of largely anonymous artists now dubbed Antwerp Mannerists. The paintings originally formed the interior of the wings of a folding triptych with the Adoration of the Magi as its center. Both show gifts being presented to a ruler on his throne and would have been understood as Old Testament prefigurations of the submission of the nations to Christ as king, the theme of the lost Adoration panel. They also provided an excuse for the artist to depict exotic costumes, architecture, and luxury goodsóthe hallmarks of the Antwerp Mannerist style.. Oil on panel, transferred to canvas . The Birth and Naming of Saint John the Baptist 1450-60 Sano di Pietro (Ansano di Pietro di Mencio) Italian This panel combines two episodes: the birth of Saint John the Baptist and his naming by his father, Zacharias, portrayed writing in the foreground. Behind him, framed by delicate colonnettes, is Elizabeth, the cousin of the Virgin Mary, who reclines in bed, having just given birth to Saint John. Although the original location of the present painting is unknown, and it cannot be associated with any other known panels, it is likely that it formed part of a predella that portrayed scenes of the Life of Saint John the Baptist. Sano di Pietros panel was inspired by Ambrogio Lorenzettis fresco depicting the Birth of the Virgin (façade of the Spedale della Scala).. The Birth and Naming of Saint John the Baptist 458984

The hunter Ameto, dressed in red, peers over a hill and then approaches some nymphs, attracted by the singing of Lia. In the background they hunt. The nymphs instruct Ameto in the meaning of love in a later episode of the story. In the other panel Ameto and two nymphs judge a musical competition between the shepherds Alcesto and Acaten. The escutcheon at the right appears to be that of the Di Lupo Parra family of Pisa. The tray dates from about 1410. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.
