The Lamentation. Artist: Follower of the Master of the Virgin among Virgins (Netherlandish, active late 15th century). Dimensions: 34 7/8 x 20 1/4 in. (88.6 x 51.4 cm).Paintings by the Master of the Virgin among Virgins, a follower of Geertgen tot Sint Jans whose eponymous work is in the Rijksmuseum, Amsterdam, are rare. This painting by an anonymous follower is closely related to his style. The diminutive Entombment scene at the right is severly abraded, but the picture is not otherwise in a bad state. This Lamentation and a Resurrection by the same hand in the Rijkmuseum appear to have been parts of the same complex, to which a Descent from the Cross in the Fogg Art Museum, Cambridge, a Meeting of the Magi in the John G. Johnston Collecion, Philadelphia, and a Crucifixion in the Chrysler Museum, Norfolk, by another member of the artist's workshop, may also have belonged. The 1913 caption reads: "Loki took the form of a woman and hastened to the mansion of Frigga." The goddess Frigga, also spelled Frig, was the highest-ranking of the Aesir goddesses. Her husband was Odin, the chief god. She was also the mother of Baldur. Loki, the impish trickster of the Norse pantheon, disguised himself in the form of a woman and approached Frigg (seen here) and asked her whether all things had sworn oaths never to harm Baldur. Not knowing the womans true identity, Frigg conceded that she had not demanded the oath from a humble sprig of mistletoe.
