Christ Crowned with Thorns by Gerard van Honthorst (1592-1656) oil on canvas, c 1622. Before Christ's trial, Roman soldiers placed a plaited crown of thorns on his head, dressed him in a cloak and mocked him. After all, was he not the 'King of the Jews' The scene is dramatically illuminated by a torch, held by the boy at the left. Honthorst probably made this painting for a clandestine Catholic church (schullkerk) in Amsterdam.

The Lamentation ca. 1560 Luis de Morales Luis de Morales was celebrated for his devotional images. Their exquisite facture and morbid sensibility made them perfect vehicles for meditation and earned him the epithet "El Divino." He was the favorite painter of the religious reformer and saint Juan de Ribera (1532-1611). As one prominent scholar has noted: "No Spanish painter was ever to surpass Morales in expressing the passionate, personal faith of the mystical writers." The Last Communion of Saint Mary of Egypt 1680 Marcantonio Franceschini Italian A fifth-century ascetic, Mary of Egypt is shown receiving her Last Communion from the hands of the priest Zosimus, following forty-seven years of isolation in the wilderness of Palestine. The picture has a pendant showing the ecstasy of Saint Mary Magdalen (Molinari Pradelli collection, Bologna). It was given in 1709 to Pope Clement XI as a gift of the Senate of Bologna in anticipation of his support for the founding of an art academy in the city. Earlier, two passing Jewish priests (at lower right) had ignored the half-dead man. The ruins and the prominent nude reflect the painters interest in Italian art and classical antiquity.
