A tree once stood behind the Child. The distinctive iconography has led some to see links to ancient Avestan beliefs or the traditional image of the Buddha. Ring with the Virgin and Child and Saints Margaret and Catherine 1420-1485 England. Though this ring cannot be definitively dated, archeological and stylistic evidence suggest that it belongs to a small group made in England in the mid-fifteenth century. All, including this example, share a simple ribbed construction and are engraved with subjects such as the Crucifixion, the Trinity, or images of saints with their attributes. This example depicts the Virgin and Child flanked by Saints Margaret and Catherine. Such ringsótraditionally called iconographic ringsówere presented as gifts and bequests or included in a dowry settlement. Used as a private call to regular and intimate daily prayers, many examples are deeply worn. This suggests that the wearer rubbed the ring during devotions.. Gold .

Liturgical Cuff 16th century The similar embroidered scenes on this cuff and on #10.168.1 show Christ standing at an altar as he administers the bread and wine of Communion to the assembled Apostles. Priests or bishops wore such epimanika when distributing Communion, thus imitating Christ's actions. The cuff now lacks its border, which likely contained inscriptions relating to the imagery.. Breastplate dated 1580 German, Augsburg The crucified Christ as Savior and Redeemer is boldly represented in the etched decoration of one half of this German breastplate. On the other half a soldier kneels in supplication before the cross, his hands clasped in prayer. From his hands there wafts a tasseled banderole bearing a plea to God for the preservation of his honor and an expression of the hope of eternal salvation: O GOT EREREI HOFNONG (Oh God, Honor?, Hope), followed by the date 1580. Phrases of this type, known as Stossgebete, are found sporadically on German armor and weapons made throughout the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries. The figure bears the arms of an infantry officer--appropriately so since the breastplate is of the type and quality made for officers serving on foot or in the light cavalry.The cross, through its association with the Crucifixion of Jesus, became the central image of Christian iconography, symbolizing the sacrifice of Christ, the promise of spiritua

At the center of the shrine is Crucifixion, with Christ before Annas on the bottom panel of the left wing, and the Bearing of the Cross above. On the right wing, the Agony in the Garden is at top, with the Entombment below. Above the center section are three medallions (the one on the left is a modern replacement) representing, from left to right: Saint Catherine, the Virgin and Child, and Saint George and the Dragon. Local artists soon produced their own versions of Constatinopolitan fashions. This temple pendant of precious metals worked in cloisonné enamel or niello are local variants of the more intricately detailed works made for the Byzantine court.As in Byzantium, temple pendants may have been worn next to the face by both the men and the women of Rus. The works shown here were perhaps buried by their owners when the Mongol armies under Batu Khan sacked Kiev in 1240.. Date: ca. 1260-70.Intended for the private contemplation and devotion of its owner, this palm-size ivory diptych illustrates both the reward of salvation and the consequence of damnation. The left wing represents the Coronation of the Virgin. At the bottom a retinue of the saved souls, including a mendicant friar, a king, a pope, and possibly a deacon, is ushered up a ladder to the celestial paradise by an angel who points the way. In the right wing Christ, accompanied by angels carrying instruments of the Passion, displays the wounds of his Crucifixion. Flask with the Adoration of the Magi 500s Byzantine The archangel Gabriel strides forward, dramatically leading the Three Wise Men bearing gifts for the Christ Child, who is seated in his mother's lap. The only text that describes the archangel as their guide is the Armenian Infancy Gospel, a popular early book elaborating on the Gospel descriptions of Christ's early life. The star that guides the magi to Bethlehem in the Gospel account (Matthew 2:1-12) appears over the Christ Child's head. Flasks like this may have been used as containers in a church. When the icon was mounted in its present frame by a German artist in the 14th century, it was considered to be an authentic portrait painted by Saint Luke. Crib of the Infant Jesus 15th century South Netherlandish Miniature cradles for the Christ Child were popular devotional objects in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries and were venerated, especially in convents, where they were often presented to women taking their vows. This splendid cradle comes from the Grand Béguinage of Louvain, Belgium, established for lay women in the twelfth century.
