Byzantine carved ivory cover to a Gospel; 5th century

Plaque with Christ Presenting the Keys to Saint Peter and the Law to Saint Paul ca. 1150-1200 German The theme of Christ handing the keys of heaven to Saint Peter and the law to Saint Paul, which originated in fourth-century Rome, refers to the Gospel of Matthew (16:18): "I also tell you that you are Peter and on this rock I will build my church." At the same time, it highlights the importance of Saint Pauls mission to the Gentiles. In this powerful interpretation, a domed structure, perhaps representing the heavenly Jerusalem, replaces the rock on which Christ is depicted more frequently. The dramatic expressions, the fluid clinging drapery, and the openwork carving are characteristic of German Romanesque ivory carving. The inscription, including the date 1200, is of later origin.. Evangelist Saint Mark writing the Gospel with his symbol, the Lion, holding a scroll 11th century German This ivory likely decorated the cover of a Gospel book. The abbreviated Latin inscription refers to the opening lines of Marks Gospel: “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness.” The miniature church resembles surviving monuments in Cologne, one of the most important Ottonian artistic centers. Date: 1000-1050.Represented here by their characteristic attributes are the four evangelists surrounding the Lamb of God (Agnus Dei), as derived from the vision of John in the Book of Revelation (4:6-7): an angel (Matthew), a winged lion (Mark), a winged ox (Luke), and an eagle (John). Originally this plaque would have covered a deluxe binding of a now-lost Gospel book. The stylization of the symbols and the type of interlaced foliate cross find parallels in manuscript illumination produced within the southern Italian region of Benevento, including at the famed Benedictine monastery of Monte Cassino. Relief with Scene from the Legend of the True Cross ca. 1400 South Netherlandish This relief, along with another in the collection (acc. no. 23.79.1), once formed part of a narrative that stretched across the back of an altar. Carved from single blocks of marble, the two compositions feature episodes from the discovery of the True Cross by Saint Helena, the mother of the Roman Emperor Constantine. In order to bring these distant events into the present, the sculptor employed clothing and character types familiar to fifteenth-century audiences. Here the crowned figure of Saint Helena clasps her hands in prayer as a workman excavates three crosses. The bearded man kneeling in prayer is Jude, who revealed their location. Altarpiece with the Virgin and Child Enthroned between Saint Jerome and Saint Nicholas of Myra. This altarpiece was made in the then modern Renaissance style. The form and motifs of the mould-ings derive from Classical Roman architecture. The material was also modern: tin-glazed earthenware. The inscription translates as: Sister Catherine, daughter of Tomaso di Salvestro, Nuccarello’s son, had this altarpiece made in the year 1502’. It comes from the church of Sant’Antonio Abate in Cortona (Italy).

Panel with St. Peter or St. Paul () 500s Byzantine Early images of religious figures are often difficult to identify. The book the man holds may mean that he is an evangelist, one of the authors of the four Gospels. His round face, short, curly beard, and balding head are typical for depictions of Saint Peter, but the lack of keys, which become a standard attribute of the saint, makes that identification uncertain. The nail holes on the edges of the ivory suggest that it may have been one of the many Byzantine ivories used to decorate the covers of religious texts when these were later taken to the West..
