One of Rembrandtís last pupils, Aert de Gelder continued to paint with the glowing colors, shimmering, richly textured surfaces, and psychological penetration of his masterís very late work well into the 18th century. Artist: Eglon van der Neer (Dutch, Amsterdam 1635/36-1703 Düsseldorf). Dimensions: 15 x 11 in. (38.1 x 27.9 cm).A young woman looks up from her reading--possibly of an emblem book or illustrated treatise--absorbed in thought or distracted by something unseen. The theme was already well-established in the early 1660s, when this painting was likely made, and in his treatment Van der Neer suggests, in the young woman's fine but modest attire, the silver writing set and sealing wax, and the extinguished candle (a conventional vanitas symbol), a degree of virtue and cultivation. For two centuries, the painting was considered to be by Gerard ter Borch. Though clearly inspired by Ter Borch, the execution is decidedly Van der Neer's own. The artist's polished mature style brought him success and noble patronage later in his career. Chinnery was born in London and after training in England became a famous portrait painter in Ireland by 1802. He married his wife Marianne on 19 April 1799 in Dublin. His father owned several trading ships and his elder brother, William Chinnery, owned what is now Gilwell Park. He was a close friend of the artist, William Armfield Hobday. Chinnery ran into debt and went to India in 1802 on a ship named Gilwell. He there re-established himself as a painter, but debt prompted a move again in 1825, when he went to southern China. While in China, he mentored Lam Qua, who eventually became a renowned medical portrait painter. He travelled around the Pearl River Delta, between Macau and Canton (now Guangzhou). He had been to Hong Kong after the British founded the city, and subsequently fell ill. He died in Macau in 1852 and is buried in the Old ProtEdwige de Wessex, Eadgifu, Edgifu, Edgiva, Ogive, 902-after 955, second wife to Charles III, called the Simple, King of Western FranciaYoung Lady with a Rose. Artist: Attributed to Pieter Vanderlyn (ca. 1687-1778). Dimensions: 32 1/2 x 27 in. (82.6 x 68.6 cm). Date: 1732.This portrait relates stylistically to documented works by Vanderlyn, who was of Dutch ancestry and practiced his profession in the region around Kingston, New York, in the Hudson River valley. While displaying a solemn expression, his sitter here wears fashionable clothing and jewelry. The pose is derived from a British mezzotint after a portrait by Sir Peter Lely (National Portrait Gallery, London). Although the drawing is awkward, the artist has shown a commendable interest in depicting human character. In her overlarge right hand, the subject holds a single rose in an explicit gesture that is also found in other portraits of young women by this artist, often signifying love and marriage. Known in Ottoman Turkey as Hurrem or Karima, she was actually born Alexandra Anastasia Lisovska as a Ukrainian in Poland. In the 1520s, Roxelana was captured by Crimean Tatars during one of their frequent raids into this region and taken as a slave, probably first to the Crimean city of Kaffa, a major centre of the slave trade, then to Constantinople, and was selected for Suleyman's harem. Roxelana quickly became the sultan's favourite, enchanted as he was with her beauty and sensuality. Their romance inspired artists, poets and writers for many years after.Portrait of a lady with a man at the window sill, 1435-1445, by Filippo Lippi (ca 1406-1469), tempera on panel, 64.1 cm x41, 9
