Altarpiece from Thuison-les-Abbeville The Ascension 1490-1500 France. This panel was once part of the altarpiece decorating the high altar of the Carthusian monastery at Thuison, outside of Abbeville in northern France. Four saints standing in niches were painted on the exterior of the altarpieceís wings. When the wings were open, the interior of the altarpiece told the story of Christís Passion and Resurrection through painted narratives on the inside of the wings and painted and gilded carvings in the central shrine whose central subject was undoubtedly the Crucifixion. The carvings have not survived. The fronts and backs of the wings were sawn apart in the mid 19th century; all the wing panels except one narrative (The Entry into Jerusalem, Hermitage, Saint Petersburg) are in the Art Institute.A rich border region north of Paris, Picardy was a possession of the Burgundian Netherlands in the mid-15th century, becoming part of France in 1477. The Nativity ca. 1433-34 Attributed to Zanobi Strozzi Italian Although long ascribed to Fra Angelico, this enchanting Nativity is probably by his pupil Zanobi Strozzi, who is especially known for his manuscript illuminations. The scene is from the base (predella) of an altarpiece. Especially the arc of angels, beautifully choreographed and dressed in a pleasing array of pastel-colored robes enhanced by gold decorations, is typical of Zanobis essentially decorative style. Scenes from the Life of Christ mid-1340s Giovanni Baronzio Italian Painted by an artist much influenced by Giotto, who around 1300 worked in the city of Rimini, along the Adriatic coast, this picture once had a companion panel. Hinged together, they formed a diptych, with scenes from the Life of Christ upon which to meditate. The narrative begins with Christ taken down from the cross and reaches a climax in the Last Judgment. At the top, Jesus crowns his mother Mary in heaven; the four saints must have been important to the person who commissioned the painting.
