Royal Air Force Operations in the Far East, 1941-1945. Indian Army engineers pause in their work to complete the airfield at Brown's West Island as a Consolidated Liberator B Mark VI of No. 356 Squadron RAF takes off on the Squadron's first operational sortie, and first operation undertaken from the Cocos islands. Seven Liberators were despatched to bomb two Japanese-held airstrips near Benkoelen, Sumatra. The engineers are using a caterpillar grader to level the ground next to the runway, on which the bitumenised strips stacked in the foreground will eventually be laid.

R6923 was originally a Mark I, converted to a Mark V after serving with No. 19 Squadron and No. 7 Operational Training Unit in 1940. American Aircraft in Royal Air Force Service 1939-1945- Douglas Db-7 Havoc. Havoc Mark I, AX910, on the ground. Part of an ex-French order for Bostons, all of which were converted to Havocs for RAF service. AX910 conducted armaments trials with the Aircraft Gun Mounting Establishment and the Air Fighting Development Unit, before a brief period of service with No. 25 Squadron RAF in July-August 1941. She finally served with No. 1453 (Fighter) Flight at Wittering, Huntingdonshire, before crashing at Aldwinkle St Peters, Northamptonshire, on 3 April 1942.

The Camera Caught This Plane Crash - A Seafire Hits The Deck -- A graphic moment caughter by the cameraman on board Britain's aircraft-carrier Illustrious. A Seafire of a Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve squadron landing on the carrier tipped on its nose as it hit the barrier. Pieces of the plane can be seen flying end the wheel buckles back as the plane hits the deck. Flight-deck hands started forward from the gun-pits, but the pilot, who can be seen in the cockpit climbed out uninjured. September 10, 1950.

The Aircraft Engine Research Laboratorys first aircraft, a Martin B-26B Marauder, parked in front of the Flight Research Building in September 1943. The military loaned the B-26B to the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (NACA) to augment the labs studies of the Wright Aeronautical R-2800 engines. The military wanted to improve the engine cooling in order to increase the bombers performance. On March 17, 1943, the B-26B performed the very first research flight at the NACAs new engine laboratory. The B-26B received its “Widowmaker” nickname during the rushed effort to transition the new aircraft from design to production and into the sky. During World War II, however, the B-26B proved itself to be a capable war machine. The U.S. lost fewer Marauders than any other type of bomber employed in the war.
