Kneeling Pilgrim with Cross and Book 1826 Germany. Executed during Johann Friedrich Overbeckís stay in Rome, Kneeling Pilgrim with Cross and Book provides the viewer with an insight into the artistís spiritual conviction. Overbeck, a founding member of the Brotherhood of Saint Luke, or the Nazarene movement, viewed art as a way to regenerate religiosity in society. The Nazarenes showed their devotion to God by adapting the styles and ideas of the Renaissance. Overbeckís sophisticated use of etching, exemplified by delicate cross-hatching and fine lines, produced an image that evokes religious depictions of the past, thus promoting traditional Christian sentiments to an increasingly materialistic society.. Justin Perkins (1805-1869) was born on a farm in Massachusetts, and educated at Amherst and the Andover Theological Seminary. From 1833 until shortly before his death in 1869, he served as missionary to the Nestorian Christians of Qajar Iran (1794-1925) under the auspices of the American Board of Commissioners of Foreign Missions. He was the first American missionary in Qajar Iran, as well as an eminent scholar of Syriac. He developed an alphabet for the writing of modern Syriac, which was the Nestorians' vernacular, and established a press at Urmia (spelled Oroomiah by Perkins) in western Azerbaijan to print his translations of the New Testament (1846) and the Old Testament (1852) in both liturgical and modern Syriac. Knight of the Livonian Brothers of the Sword, founded in 1202 by Albert I, Bishop of Riga. The order took vows of chastity, poverty and obediance, and to battle the infidels of Livonia. It became rich and was united with the Teutonic order in 1228. It split from the Teutonic knights in 1525, and was destroyed soon after..
