ISS012-E-5241 (19 Oct. 2005) --- This image of Hurricane Wilma was taken at 8:22 a.m. CDT Wednesday, Oct. 19, by the crew aboard NASA's international space station as the complex flew 222 miles above the storm. At the time, Wilma was the strongest Atlantic hurricane in history, with winds near 175 miles per hour. The storm was located in the Caribbean Sea, 340 miles southeast of Cozumel, Mexico.

NASA image acquired December 3, 2012 As predicted, Typhoon Bopha made landfall on the Philippine island of Mindanao overnight December 3-4, 2012. Known in the Philippines as Pablo, the storm was blamed for 43 deaths and 25 injuries as of December 4, according to the Philippine Daily Inquirer. This image is from the VIIRS day-night band,” which detects light in a range of wavelengths from green to near-infrared and uses filtering techniques to observe signals such as gas flares, auroras, wildfires, city lights, and reflected moonlight. Bopha remained a powerful typhoon as it made landfall on Mindanao, retaining a distinct eye and spiral shape as storm clouds stretched over the eastern part of the island. Unis

A view from the Space Shuttle Atlantis gives a good look of Hurricane Gordon. At the time the photo was taken, the center of Gordon was near 37.5 north latitude and 46.4 west longitude moving west-northwest. The sustained winds were at 80 nautical miles per hour with gusts to 95 nautical miles per hour.

These views of Hurricane Isidore were acquired by NASA's Terra satellite on September 20, 2002 as it flooded western Cuba and swept westward to Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula.

These satellites are part of the Joint Global Multi-Nation Birds Satellite project (BIRDS-1), a cross-border interdisciplinary satellite project for non-space faring countries supported by Japan. During this 2-year project, students from the Graduate School of Engineering of the Kyushu Institute of Technology design, develop and operate CubeSats belonging to the five participating countries.

A strong late-winter cyclone brought significant snows and blizzard conditions to the upper Great Lakes/northern Plains on 21 February 2014. In the warm sector of the storm, there were numerous reports of tornadoes, large hail, and damaging winds in the eastern US. Suomi NPP viewed the storm multiple times, including just before 1800 UTC on 21 February.

On Sept. 5, 2019 at about noon EDT, the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument aboard NASA's Terra satellite passed over the eye of Hurricane Dorian as the storm tracked northeast along the Atlantic coast, about 50 miles from Charleston, South Carolina. During this time, Dorian was weakening from Category 3 to Category 2 following a second period of intensification. MISR carries nine cameras fixed at different angles, each of which viewed Dorian over a period of about seven minutes. The multi-camera views are used to calculate the heights of the cloud tops, and the motion of the clouds between the views provides information on wind speed and direction. The left side of the image shows the view from the downward-pointing (nadir) camera, with wind velocity vectors superimposed over it. . NASA Sees Storms Affecting the Western U.S.

Arctic air has surged into the U.S. pushing into the Southeastern states and dropping high temperatures there into the 20s with colder wind chills. This NOAA GOES-East satellite image was captured at 1445 UTC/9 45 a.m. EST on January 28, and between the clouds and the snow on the ground with cold air overhead, it appears as if much of the U.S. has been covered by an "Arctic Blanket." According to NOAA's National Weather Service (NWS), the Gulf coast states from southern Louisiana east to the Carolinas are facing a wintry mix of precipitation along the southern edge of the Arctic air. Meanwhile, NWS notes that wind chills throughout much of the central and eastern U.S. are in single and negative numbers during the day on January 28. WASHINGTON (Aug. 26, 2012) A GOES-13 infrared satellite image of Tropical Storm Isaac provided by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Monterey, Calif., shows the storm at 11:00 a.m. EST as it passes over Cuba. NRL projections expect Isaac to strengthen into a hurricane and impact the Gulf Coast of the United States on Wednesday, Aug. 29.

These visualizations of Hurricane Jeanne on September 24, 2004 were captured by NASA's Terra spacecraft after the hurricane caused widespread destruction on Puerto Rico, Haiti and the Dominican Republic.

On Sept. 7, the Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer (MISR) instrument on NASA's Terra satellite passed over Hurricane Irma at approximately 11 20 a.m. local time. The MISR instrument comprises nine cameras that view the Earth at different angles, and since it takes roughly seven minutes for all nine cameras to capture the same location, the motion of the clouds between images allows scientists to calculate the wind speed at the cloud tops. The animated GIF shows Irma's motion over the seven minutes of the MISR imagery. North is toward the top of the image. This composite image shows Hurricane Irma as viewed by the central, downward-looking camera (left), as well as the wind speeds (right) superimposed on the image. On the forecast track, the center of Maria will move across the Leeward Islands and then over the extreme northeastern Caribbean Sea Tuesday and Tuesday night.

Isaac is expected to strengthen into a hurricane and impact the Gulf Coast of the United States Tuesday night or Wednesday morning.

WASHINGTON (Sept. 11, 2018) An infrared satellite image of the Atlantic Ocean from the GOES 16 Advanced Baseline Imager showing Hurricane Florence at 6:00 a.m. EST, Sept. 11, 2018. Florence is currently a Category 4 hurricane with sustained winds of 140 mph, gusting to 165 mph, and moving west-northwest at 15 mph. The storm is approximately 410 miles south of Bermuda.

The Earth from the Moon

When NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite passed over Patricia on October 23 at 5 20 a.m. EDT the VIIRS instrument that flies aboard Suomi NPP looked at the storm in infrared light. Cloud top temperatures of thunderstorms around the eyewall were between 180K (-135.7F/ -93.1C) and 190 Kelvin (-117.7F/ -83.1C).

On Sept. 22 at 0923 UTC/5:23 a.m. EDT, just south of Usagi's eye where rain was falling at a rate of over 169mm/~6.7 inches per hour along China's coast. TRMM radar sliced through Usagi and found that heights of some thunderstorms were reaching only about 12 km /7.4 miles.

NASA's Multi-angle Imaging SpectroRadiometer instrument captured this image of Hurricane Earl Aug. 30, 2010. At this time, Hurricane Earl was a Category 3 storm. The hurricane's eye is just visible on the right edge of the MISR image swath.

This visible image of Tropical Storm Miriam was captured by NOAA's GOES-15 satellite on Sept. 26, 2012 at 10 45 a.m. EDT off the coast of Baja California. The strongest thunderstorms were in a large band of thunderstorms north and northwest of the center. Miriam is banked to the north and west by an extensive field of stratocumulus clouds.

A pair of weather instruments built at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Southern California captured images of Hurricane Franklin as the Category 4 storm moved off the East Coast of the United States on Aug. 29, 2023. COWVR (short for Compact Ocean Wind Vector Radiometer) and TEMPEST (Temporal Experiment for Storms and Tropical Systems) observe the planet's atmosphere and surface from aboard the International Space Station, which passed in low Earth orbit over the storm at about 9 58 a.m. EDT. This image combines microwave emissions measurements from both COWVR and TEMPEST. White sections indicate the presence of clouds. Green portions indicate rain. Yellow, red, and black indicate where air and water vapor were moving most vigorously. Franklin's center is seen about 700 miles (1,127 kilometers) east of Jacksonville, Florida, over the Atlantic Ocean.

The first tropical cyclone in the Northern Indian Ocean this season has been getting better organized as seen in NASA satellite imagery. Tropical Cyclone Mahasen is projected to track north through the Bay of Bengal and make landfall later this week. On May 13, NASA-NOAA's Suomi NPP satellite captured various night-time and day-time imagery that showed Mesospheric Gravity Waves, lightning, and heavy rainfall in false-colored imagery.

Japan stretches diagonally across the image, up to the top right corner.The dust is likely from the sandstorm that swept across the China the previous day. The sand and dust originated from the south and east of Inner Mongolia. In this image from March 20, the dust is nearly obscuring the Bohai Sea, which is just west of the Korean peninsula. WASHINGTON (Aug. 7, 2014) A GOES-15 infrared satellite image of Hurricane Iselle provided by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) in Monterey, Calif., shows the storm at approximately 8:00 a.m. EST in the Pacific Ocean. the Hawaiian Islands are to the left of the storm.

Hawaii's Kilauea volcano continues to create new land as flows from fissure 8, one of the most active to break ground since the eruption began in early May, reach the ocean. The Advanced Spaceborne Thermal Emission and Reflection (ASTER) radiometer instrument on NASA's Terra satellite detected the lava flow of fissure 8 -- which extends from Leilani Estates to the Pacific Ocean -- on July 25. In the image, vegetation is displayed in red, clouds are white and the hot lava flows, detected by ASTER's thermal infrared channels, are overlaid in yellow. The image covers an area of 9.5 by 11.5 miles (15.3 by 18.6 kilometers).

On the afternoon of Sept. 1, 2016, NASA's Terra spacecraft passed over Tropical Storm Hermine as it strengthened into a Category 1 hurricane approaching the coast of Florida.

NASA image acquired August 31, 2010In this natural-color image from August 31, 2010, the oceans canvas swirls with turquoise, teal, navy, and green, the abstract art of the natural world. The colors were painted by a massive phytoplankton bloom made up of millions of tiny, light-reflecting organisms growing in the sunlit surface waters of the Barents Sea. Such blooms peak every August in the Barents Sea.The variations in color are caused by different species and concentrations of phytoplankton. The bright blue colors are probably from coccolithophores, a type of phytoplankton that is coated in a chalky shell that reflects light, turning the ocean a milky turquoise. Coccolithophores dominate the Barents Sea in August. Shades of green are likely from diatoms, another type of phytoplankton. Diatoms usually dominate the Barents Sea earlier in the year, giving way to coccolithophores in the late summer. However, field measurements of previous August blooms have also turned up high conc

In the midst of a cold snap that sent temperatures 20-40°F (11-22°C) below normal across much of the United States, the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) on the Terra satellite captured this image of cloud streets over the Atlantic Ocean on January 7, 2014. Cloud streetslong parallel bands of cumulus cloudsform when cold air blows over warmer waters and a warmer air layer (or temperature inversion) rests over the top of both. The comparatively warm water gives up heat and moisture to the cold air above, and columns of heated air called thermals naturally rise through the atmosphere. The temperature inversion acts like a lid, so when the rising thermals hit it, they roll over and loop back on themselves, creating parallel cylinders of rotating air. As this happens, the moisture cools and condenses into flat-bottomed, fluffy-topped cumulus clouds that line up parallel to the direction of the prevailing wind. . Hurricane Hilary Captured by NASA's AIRS. NASA's Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) captured Hurricane Hilary on the morning of Aug. 18, 2023, when it was a Category 4 storm roughly 470 miles (760 kilometers) south of Baja California. Hilary could be the first tropical storm to make landfall in California since 1939, according to the National Weather Service. Hilary grew from a tropical storm into a Category 2 hurricane within 24 hours on Aug. 17. Another period of rapid intensification - an increase in maximum sustained wind speed of at least 30 knots (35 mph) within 24 hours - occurred Aug. 17-18. The animation shows some of this rapid growth, with images taken by AIRS Aug. 15-18. This intensification was driven by very warm ocean surface waters and weak wind shear, a term for vertical changes in wind speed. Strong wind shear can keep hurricanes from forming, or can tear them apart. AIRS measures cloud temperatures in infrared wavelengths, which can reveal information about the at

NASA's Terra satellite captured an image of the snow-covered eastern U.S. that looks like the states have been sitting in a freezer. In addition to the snow cover, Arctic and Siberian air masses have settled in over the Eastern U.S. triggering many record low temperatures in many states. On Feb. 19 at 16 40 UTC (11 40 a.m. EST), the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) instrument that flies aboard NASA's Terra satellite captured a picture of the snowy landscape. The snow cover combined with the frosty air mass made the eastern U.S. feel like the inside of freezer. The MODIS image was created at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland. On the morning of Feb. 20, NOAA's Weather Prediction Center (WPC) noted, "There were widespread subzero overnight lows Thursday night (Feb. 19) extending from Illinois to western Virginia, and numerous record lows were set. NASA image acquired August 4, 2010Intense fires continued to rage in western Russia on August 4, 2010. Burning in dry peat bogs and forests, the fires produced a dense plume of smoke that reached across hundreds of kilometers. The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) captured this view of the fires and smoke in three consecutive overpasses on NASAs Terra satellite. The smooth gray-brown smoke hangs over the Russian landscape, completely obscuring the ground in places. This image, taken at 1 35 pm local time on Tuesday, September 11, 2018 by the Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) onboard NASA's Aqua satellite shows Hurricane Florence whose strong winds are expected to reach the Carolina coast late Thursday. Florence intensified from a Category 2 to a Category 4 storm in a matter of hours. As of Tuesday evening, Florence had maximum sustained winds of 140 mph (225 kph). AIRS has more than 2,000 channels that capture various hues of infrared, and this image represents the temperature of the cloud tops and the ocean surface (called brightness temperature in the image). Data taken during a 10-day collection cycle ending March 9, 2001, show that above-normal sea-surface heights and warmer ocean temp. (red and white areas) still blanket the far-western tropical Pacific and much of the north (and south) mid-Pacific.

Since the weak El Nio event of last winter, the equatorial Pacific has cooled and oceanographers have been on a La Nia 'watch.' Thus far, equatorial waters have seesawed between cooling and the present slight warming.

A repeat of last year's mild La Nia conditions -- with a stormy winter in the Pacific Northwest and a dry winter in the southwestern United States -- will be the likely outcome of sea-surface heights observed by NASA's TOPEX/Poseidon satellite.

NASA's Atmospheric Infrared Sounder (AIRS) instrument aboard the Aqua satellite captured imagery of Typhoon Hinnamnor in the West Pacific Ocean just before 2 p.m. local time on Sept. 5, 2022. Typhoon Hinnamnor was one of the strongest in South Korea's recorded history, dropping some 40 inches (102 centimeters) of rain and unleashing record winds. In this infrared AIRS image, the typhoon is moving northward over the Korean Peninsula (center), with the coast of China to the west and the southernmost Japanese islands to the east. The large purple area indicates very cold clouds at about minus 90 degrees Fahrenheit (minus 67 degrees Celsius), carried high into the atmosphere by deep thunderstorms. These storm clouds are associated with very heavy rainfall. The extensive areas of red away from the storm indicate temperatures of around 80 F (26 C), typical of Earth's daytime surface during late summer.
