Landscape in the Style of Juran and Yan Wengui Dated 1713 Wang Hui Chinese At the age of eighty, Wang Hui continued to find inspiration for his paintings in the styles of the ancients. On an album leaf in the National Palace Museum, Taipei, dated 1713, he wrote that his sixty years of studying and emulating old masters had passed like a single day. In autumn of the same year, he painted this handscroll, which combines the disparate styles of Juran (act. ca. 960-95), evoked with long, soft brush lines that give texture and contour to the hillsides, and of Yan Wengui (act. ca. 970-1030), suggested by finely textured surfaces executed in crisp short strokes and dots. The inscription describes Wang Hui's inspiration:Some years ago I was a guest in the capital, where, at the home of a collector, I was able to see a great many scrolls by ancient men. Cottages in an Extensive Landscape late 1820s William Henry Hunt Hunts career forms a bridge between English watercolor painting of the later eighteenth century, and Victorian masters such as John Frederick Lewis, Myles Birket Foster and the Pre-Raphaelites. At sixteen, he began a seven-year apprenticeship with John Varley, became a sketching companion of fellow student John Linnell, and took classes at the Royal Academy Schools. Most significantly, Hunt joined the circle of young artists who gathered on winter evenings at the London house of Dr. Thomas Monro to copy drawings by Canaletto and John Robert Cozens—and made summer visits to his patron's house near Bushey in Hertfordshire. The hilly landscape in this beautifully fresh early watercolor may lie near the latter. Within a landscape evoked by freely applied washes, architectural forms are used to add definition.
