China Among Neolithic jades, the cong displays the most complex form: a cylindrical tube encased in a square prism that gently tapers from top to bottom. Simple masks with circular eyes and bar-shaped mouths decorate the corners. Enigmatic in function and meaning, the cong probably signified wealth and social status. In a tomb found at Sidun, Jiangsu Province, numerous cong lay in a circle around the dead, suggesting that they also served a religious or ritual purpose. Among the Manding peoples, professional male musicians play such xylophones to accompany praise songs in a manner akin to music of the kora. Each hand holds a rubber-tipped mallet and bells are strapped to the player's wrist to add rhythmic emphasis. A sound modifier is affixed over the holes located under the bars in the side of each gourd. In old examples such as this one, the modifier, which produces a buzzing sound essential to the African music aesthetic, is made of a membrane from a spider's-egg case. Today, makers use a more durable and accessible materialcigarette paper.. Middle Kingdom Among the pleasures of an Egyptian noble's life were hunting excursions in the Nile marshes to fish and hunt birds. Papyrus rafts or light boats such as this were used for such excursions. Here, Meketre and his son or companion are watching the hunters from a light shelter made of woven reeds and decorated with two large shields. In the prow, two men aim harpoons at some fish, while amidships a kneeling fisherman removes the harpoon from a bolti fish. An earlier catch, a large Mormyrus, is being presented to Meketre. A bunchof coots, caught previously in a clapnet, are presented by a man and a woman, who wears a bead net over her shoulders, brings a duck. The poles of the clapnet are now lashed to the grilles of the shelter; the net pegs lie on the deck. The presence of females from a noble's family in such marsh scenes is a recurring theme in Egyptian art.. Model Sporting Boat. ca. 1981-1975 B.C.. Silversmiths devoted considerable time and creative energy to generating an endless variety of new designs and patterns. During the 1860s and 1870s silver flatware ornamented with portrait medallions inspired by antique coins and cameos enjoyed widespread popularity, with virtually every American silversmith producing their own proprietary "medallion" pattern. Gorham Manufacturing Companys designer George Wilkinson patented a medallion flatware pattern in 1864, and the quantity and variety of surviving silver in this pattern attest to its success. Medallions from this flatware pattern ornament the toast rack (.4) as well as a tea set (.1-.3) and goblet (.5) in the American Wings collection. While the 'intellgence' of these machines will always be inferior to that of humans, machines have the advantage in that they can perform repetitive tasks over a longer period with great efficiency. Machines designed by al-Jazari include 'Castle Clock', 'Robotic Man', 'Musical Boat' and 'Elephant Water Clock'.Tinplate Toy Citroen Car, 1919-1932. Considered the forerunner to the modern automobile, in a note referring to this model, Leonardo da Vinci defines the cart as man's most important invention; This model of a Self-propelled Cart demonstrates the implementation of his knowledge of the most complicated self-propelling mechanisms for theatrical events. The cart would be operated by a manual loading system with leaf springs, which through a series of complicated cog-wheels would transmit the stored power to the drive wheels. The independent drives were connected both to the wheels and a device that differentiated the speed, while a shaft, also with a wheel, served to steer the cart in the right direction.Close-up of a pagoda modelOriginal Regenschirm von Sisi, ehemalige Ausstellung im Schloss GödöllÅ, Ungarn *** Original Umbrella from Sisi, former Exhibition at Castle GödöllÅ, Hungary 1033903023Model of a Royal Procession, Benin, West Africa, 20th century, Fon people.Reconstructed remains of a 5th century BC, ceremonial wagon, Czech.
