Date: 1490s.This sheet is a significant example of the scientific study of perspective in the fifteenth century. It represents an exercise in foreshortening the human head, through which the profile could be used to construct alternative views. The horizontal lines - incised with a stylus - and the letters annotated around the ear served as coordinate points to produce such a transformation, while the pricked outlines aided in the replication of the profile. This diagram closely follows the method of foreshortening described in a treatise on perspective written by Signorelli's master, Piero della Francesca. It is a somber counterpart to the lively etched portrait of Gachet made by Van Gogh only weeks earlier (2021.243). Gachet signed his works Van Rysselderiving the name from his birthplace near Lille (Ryssel in Flemish)and encouraged a number of artists, including Van Gogh, to try etching by sharing access to the press in his home. This impression is dedicated to Louis Lumet, an anarchist writer, who co-founded an organization called LArt pour tous (Art for All) in 1901, whom Gachet likely met through Socialist circles. Emilie Mediz-Pelikan (Austrian, 1861 - 1908) Dec-06 This drawing features the portrait of a young woman with long blond hair and hypnotic eyes in front of a stylized background. She is identified with an inscription as the Goose Girl, the protagonist of a German fairy tale published by the brothers Grimm in 1815. The story recounts the struggles of a princess who is forced to switch identity with her evil maid and take care of geese. The artist Emilie Mediz-Pelikan chose to depict the young woman with her protective charm around her neck: her loss of this charm in the river causes her adversity.
