(20.3 x 29.8 cm). A major proponent of Aestheticism and Japonisme, James McNeill Whistler also helped to revitalize etching as a serious, creative pursuit. His appreciation for this medium was fostered, in part, by close study of etchings by the seventeenth-century Dutch master Rembrandt. For his own prolific output, Whistler often went out into the streets of London (where he settled in 1859), capturing urban views directly onto plates. Back in the studio, he would painstakingly experiment with inking processes and the timing of the acid bath, refining his original conceptions to create prints of great technical and visual complexity. Internationally acclaimed and exhibited, Whistlers etchings exerted a strong influence on a younger generation of American painter-etchers. American Art 1879

Black Lion Wharf 1859 James McNeill Whistler American When he moved to London in 1859, Whistler lodged near the Thames in the docklands south of Tower Bridge and began to make etchings of the river. New visual modes are explored here, with cropped forms and distinct spatial zones recalling Japanese woodblock printsa genre he began collecting in Paris. Borrowing an effect from photographs, he renders the distant warehouses in sharp focus but treats closer forms broadly. Made in 1859, this etching was not published until 1871 in A Series of Sixteen Etchings of Scenes on the Thames and Other Subjects (the "Thames Set"). That year, Whistler also reproduced it on the wall behind his mother in the now famous painting, Arrangement in Grey and Black (Musée d’Orsay, Paris).. Black Lion Wharf 372709

A Dutch Fleet Under Sail at Sea in a Light Breeze 1665 Willem van de Velde I Dutch Willem van de Velde was one of the first marine artists to sail with the Dutch fleet and rely not on written or oral observation for his paintings of naval engagements but on the sketches he drew from life. He could match any shipbuilder in his knowledge of ships, their rigging and habits. This drawing may have been sketched on the spot while the artist was sailing with the Dutch fleet before the Battle of Lowestoft (Second Anglo-Dutch War) in June 1665.
