ISS038-E-019482 (21 Dec. 2013) --- NASA astronaut Mike Hopkins participates in the first Expedition 38 spacewalk designed to troubleshoot a faulty coolant pump on the International Space Station. He was joined by NASA astronaut Rick Mastracchio while four crewmates representing Roscosmos and the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency remained inside the orbital outpost.

S123-E-006078 (13/14 March 2008) --- Astronaut Garrett Reisman, Expedition 16 flight engineer, participates in the mission's first scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the seven-hour and one-minute spacewalk, Reisman and astronaut Rick Linnehan (out of frame), STS-123 mission specialist, prepared the Japanese logistics module-pressurized section (JLP) for removal from Space Shuttle Endeavour's payload bay; opened the Centerline Berthing Camera System on top of the Harmony module; removed the Passive Common Berthing Mechanism and installed both the Orbital Replacement Unit (ORU) tool change out mechanisms on the Canadian-built Dextre robotic system, the final element of the station's Mobile Servicing System.

iss061e011882 (Oct. 18, 2019) --- With the Earth 250 miles below, NASA astronaut Jessica Meir is pictured tethered to the outside of the International Space Station during a seven-hour, 17-minute spacewalk she conducted with fellow NASA astronaut Christina Koch (out of frame). The duo swapped a failed battery charge-discharge unit (BCDU) with a spare during the first all-woman spacewalk. The BCDU regulates the charge to the batteries that collect and distribute solar power to the orbiting labs systems.

S123-E-008575 (23 March 2008) --- Astronaut Robert L. Behnken, STS-123 mission specialist, working with astronaut Mike Foreman (out of frame), assumes an insect-like position not so easily accomplished in Earth's gravity. The two were nearing the completion of the fifth and final spacewalk involving the STS-123/Expedition 16 crewmembers.

S133-E-007198 (28 Feb. 2011) --- Partially inside, partially outside the Quest airlock on the International Space Station, astronaut Alvin Drew prepares to begin his shared spacewalking duties with astronaut Steve Bowen. The two STS-133 mission specialists are scheduled for one more session of extravehicular activity on March 2.

S119-E-006675 (19 March 2009) --- Astronaut Steve Swanson (center right), STS-119 mission specialist, participates in the mission's first scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, seven-minute spacewalk, Swanson and astronaut Richard Arnold (out of frame), mission specialist, connected bolts to permanently attach the S6 truss segment to S5. The spacewalkers plugged in power and data connectors to the truss, prepared a radiator to cool it, opened boxes containing the new solar arrays and deployed the Beta Gimbal Assemblies containing masts that support the solar arrays.

S124-E-006385 (5 June 2008) --- Astronauts Mike Fossum (left) and Ron Garan, both STS-124 mission specialists, participate in the mission's second scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the seven-hour, 11-minute spacewalk, Fossum and Garan installed television cameras on the front and rear of the Kibo Japanese Pressurized Module (JPM) to assist Kibo robotic arm operations, removed thermal covers from the Kibo robotic arm, prepared an upper JPM docking port for flight day seven's attachment of the Kibo logistics module, readied a spare nitrogen tank assembly for its installation during the third spacewalk, retrieved a failed television camera from the Port 1 truss, and inspected the port Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ).

S126-E-008050 (18 Nov. 2008) --- Astronaut Steve Bowen, STS-126 mission specialist, participates in the mission's first session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 52-minute spacewalk, Bowen and astronaut Heidemarie Stefanyshyn-Piper (out of frame), mission specialist, worked to clean and lubricate part of the station's starboard Solar Alpha Rotary Joints (SARJ) and to remove two of SARJ's 12 trundle bearing assemblies. The spacewalkers also removed a depleted nitrogen tank from a stowage platform on the outside of the complex and moved it into Endeavour's cargo bay. They also moved a flex hose rotary coupler from the shuttle to the station stowage platform, as well as removing some insulation blankets from the common berthing mechanism on the Kibo laboratory.

S114-E-6194 (3 August 2005) --- This picture of the forward section of the Space Shuttle Discovery docked to the International Space Station was taken by Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency Astronaut Soichi Noguchi during the third and final spacewalk for the STS-114 mission.Both Noguchi and his crewmate Astronaut Stephen K. Robinson were equipped with digital still cameras on the spacewalks.

ISS022-E-069162 (19 Feb. 2010) --- The space shuttle Endeavour is featured in this image photographed by an Expedition 22 crew member on the International Space Station soon after the shuttle and station began their post-undocking relative separation. Undocking of the two spacecraft occurred at 7:54 p.m. (EST) on Feb. 19, 2010. Also pictured are the newly-installed Tranquility node and Cupola (top foreground); along with the Canadarm2 and the Japanese Kibo complex. S122-E-008750 (15 Feb. 2008) --- Astronaut Rex Walheim (foreground), mission specialist, shares a spacewalk task with astronaut Stanley Love (partially obscured at top of frame), mission specialist. The two astronauts had paired up for the first of three scheduled STS-122 sessions of extravehicular activity earlier in the week and came back out for this final EVA on Feb. 15.

Among other tasks, Reilly and Olivas connected power, data and cooling cables between S1 and S3; released the launch restraints from and deployed the four solar array blanket boxes on S4 and released the cinches and winches holding the photovoltaic radiator on S4.

S127-E-007096 (20 July 2009) --- This is one of a series of digital still images showing astronaut Dave Wolf performing his second spacewalk and the Endeavours second also of the scheduled five overall in a little over a weeks time to continue work on the International Space Station. The equipment floating in front of Wolf is tethered to his spacesuit. Astronauts Wolf and Tom Marshburn (out of frame), both mission specialists, successfully transferred a spare KU-band antenna to long-term storage on the space station, along with a backup coolant system pump module and a spare drive motor for the station's robot arm transporter. Installation of a television camera on the Japanese Exposed Facility experiment platform was deferred to a later spacewalk.

ISS026-E-030711 (28 Feb. 2011) --- NASA astronauts Steve Bowen and Alvin Drew (partially obscured at center), both STS-133 mission specialists, participate in the missions first session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 34-minute spacewalk, Bowen and Drew installed the J612 power extension cable, move a failed ammonia pump module to the External Stowage Platform 2 on the Quest Airlock for return to Earth at a later date, installed a camera wedge on the right hand truss segment, installed extensions to the mobile transporter rail and exposed the Japanese Message in a Bottle experiment to space.

ISS036-E-033161 (16 Aug. 2013) --- Russian cosmonaut Fyodor Yurchikhin, Expedition 36 flight engineer, attired in a Russian Orlan spacesuit, participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) to continue outfitting the International Space Station. During the seven-hour, 29-minute spacewalk the longest ever conducted by a pair of Russian cosmonauts Yurchikhin and Alexander Misurkin (out of frame) rigged cables for the future arrival of a Russian laboratory module and installed an experiment panel.

S119-E-007298 (23 March 2009) --- Astronauts Richard Arnold (left) and Joseph Acaba, both STS-119 mission specialists, participate in the mission's third scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 27-minute spacewalk, Arnold and Acaba helped robotic arm operators relocate the Crew Equipment Translation Aid (CETA) cart from the Port 1 to Starboard 1 truss segment, installed a new coupler on the CETA cart, lubricated snares on the "B" end of the space station's robotic arm and performed a few "get ahead" tasks.

STS100-396-019 (24 April 2001) --- Astronaut Scott E. Parazynski, STS-100 mission specialist, totes a Direct Current Switching Unit while anchored on the end of the Canadian-built Remote Manipulator System (RMS) robotic arm. The RMS is in the process of moving Parazynski to the exterior of the Destiny laboratory (right foreground), where, assisted by astronaut Chris A. Hadfield (out of frame), he will secure the spare unit--a critical part for the station's electrical system--to the stowage platform for future crews in case it is needed. Also in the frame are the Italian-built Raffaello Multi-Purpose Logistics Module (center) and the new Canadarm2 (lower right) or Space Station Remote Manipulator System (SSRMS).

S118-E-06313 (11 Aug. 2007) --- Astronauts Rick Mastracchio and Canadian Space Agency's Dave Williams (out of frame), both STS-118 mission specialists, participate in the mission's first planned session of extravehicular activity (EVA), as construction continues on the International Space Station. During the 6-hour, 17-minute spacewalk Mastracchio and Williams attached the Starboard 5 (S5) segment of the station's truss, retracted the forward heat-rejecting radiator from the station's Port 6 (P6) truss, and performed several get-ahead tasks.

ISS040-E-091352 (12 Aug. 2014) --- The Georges Lemaitre Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV-5), photographed by an Expedition 40 crew member, is about to dock to the aft port of the International Space Stations Zvezda Service Module. Docking occurred at 8:30 a.m. (CDT) as the ATV and the station flew 260 miles over southern Kazakhstan, following a two-week period of free-flight.

During the six-hour, 24-minute spacewalk, Mastracchio and astronaut Clayton Anderson (out of frame), mission specialist, hooked up fluid lines of the new 1,700-pound tank, retrieved some micrometeoroid shields from the Quest airlocks exterior, relocated a portable foot restraint and prepared cables on the Zenith 1 truss for a spare Space to Ground Ku-Band antenna, two chores required before space shuttle Atlantis' STS-132/ULF-4 mission in May.

ISS021-E-030631 (21 Nov. 2009) --- A close look at the helmet visor of astronaut Randy Bresnik, STS-129 mission specialist, reveals his crewmate, astronaut Mike Foreman, capturing the image with an electronic still camera. The two were in the midst of the second scheduled spacewalk for the Atlantis crew members.

S125-E-009609 (18 May 2009) --- Astronaut John Grunsfeld, STS-125 mission specialist, positioned on a foot restraint on the end of Atlantis remote manipulator system (RMS), participates in the missions fifth and final session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as work continues to refurbish and upgrade the Hubble Space Telescope. During the seven-hour and two-minute spacewalk, Grunsfeld and astronaut Andrew Feustel (out of frame), mission specialist, installed a battery group replacement, removed and replaced a Fine Guidance Sensor and three thermal blankets (NOBL) protecting Hubbles electronics.

Stefanyshyn-Piper (partially obscured, lower left), both STS-115 mission specialists, participate in the first of three sessions of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction resumes on the International Space Station.

ISS030-E-078537 (16 Feb. 2012) --- Russian cosmonauts Oleg Kononenko and Anton Shkaplerov, both Expedition 30 flight engineers, participate in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) to continue outfitting the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 15-minute spacewalk, Kononenko and Shkaplerov moved the Strela-1 crane from the Pirs Docking Compartment to begin preparing the Pirs for its replacement next year with a new laboratory and docking module. The duo used another boom, the Strela-2, to move the hand-operated crane to the Poisk module for future assembly and maintenance work. Both telescoping booms extend like fishing rods and are used to move massive components outside the station. On the exterior of the Poisk Mini-Research Module 2 (MRM2), they also installed the Vinoslivost Materials Sample Experiment, which will investigate the influence of space on the mechanical properties of the materials. ISS022-E-025518 (14 Jan. 2010) --- Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov, Expedition 22 flight engineer, uses a digital still camera to expose a photo of his helmet visor during a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. Also visible in the reflections in the visor are various components of the station and a blue and white portion of Earth. During the spacewalk, Kotov and cosmonaut Maxim Suraev (out of frame) prepared the Mini-Research Module 2 (MRM2), known as Poisk, for future Russian vehicle dockings. Suraev and NASA astronaut Jeffrey Williams, commander, will be the first to use the new docking port when they relocate their Soyuz TMA-16 spacecraft from the aft port of the Zvezda Service Module on Jan. 21.

ISS023-E-047488 (18 May 2010) --- In the grasp of the stations robotic Canadarm2, the Russian-built Mini-Research Module 1 (MRM-1) is moved to be permanently attached to the Earth-facing port of the Zarya Functional Cargo Block (FGB) of the International Space Station. Named Rassvet, Russian for "dawn," the module is the second in a series of new pressurized components for Russia. Rassvet will be used for cargo storage and will provide an additional docking port to the station.

STS105-E-5254 (16 August 2001) --- Astronauts Daniel T. Barry (near bottom of frame) and Patrick G. Forrestersurround the Early Ammonia Servicer(EAS), which they will install on a segment of the P6 structure on the International Space Station (ISS). Thetwo mission specialists were participating in the first of two scheduled STS-105 space walks. The image was recorded with a digital still camera.

S117-E-07332 (13 June 2007) --- Astronauts Steven Swanson and Patrick Forrester (out of frame), both STS-117 mission specialists, participate in the mission's second planned session of extravehicular activity (EVA), as construction resumes on the International Space Station. Among other tasks, Forrester and Swanson removed all of the launch locks holding the 10-foot-wide solar alpha rotary joint in place and began the solar array retraction.

STS-103 mission specialist John M. Grunsfeld (attached to a workstation on the RMS arm) and payload commander Steven L. Smith (free-floating) perform a changeout of the Rate Sensor Units (RSU) in one of the bays of -V3 plane of the Hubble Space Telescope (HST). This repair was performed during the first of three extravehicular activities (EVAs) of the mission. Grunsfeld is distinguished by having no marks on his EMU and Smith is distinguished by the red strip on the pants of his EMU.

ISS023-E-021014 (9 April 2010) --- NASA astronaut Clayton Anderson, STS-131 mission specialist, participates in the mission's first session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 27-minute spacewalk, Anderson and astronaut Rick Mastracchio (out of frame), mission specialist, helped move a new 1,700-pound ammonia tank from space shuttle Discoverys cargo bay to a temporary parking place on the station, retrieved an experiment from the Japanese Kibo Laboratory exposed facility and replaced a Rate Gyro Assembly on one of the truss segments.

During the 6-hour, 17-minute spacewalk Mastracchio and Williams attached the Starboard 5 (S5) segment of the station's truss, retracted the forward heat-rejecting radiator from the station's Port 6 (P6) truss, and performed several get-ahead tasks.

S129-E-007756 (21 Nov. 2009) --- Astronaut Randy Bresnik (near the Columbus laboratory), STS-129 mission specialist, participates in the mission's second session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, eight-minute spacewalk, Bresnik and astronaut Mike Foreman (out of frame), mission specialist, installed a Grappling Adaptor to On-Orbit Railing Assembly, or GATOR, on the Columbus laboratory. GATOR contains a ship-tracking antenna system and a HAM radio antenna. They relocated a floating potential measurement unit that gauges electric charges that build up on the station, deployed a Payload Attach System on the space-facing side of the Starboard 3 truss segment and installed a wireless video system that allows spacewalkers to transmit video to the station and relay it to Earth.

ISS032-E-020594 (20 Aug. 2012) --- Russian cosmonaut Gennady Padalka, Expedition 32 commander, participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) to continue outfitting the International Space Station. During the five-hour, 51-minute spacewalk, Padalka and Russian cosmonaut Yuri Malenchenko (out of frame), flight engineer, moved the Strela-2 cargo boom from the Pirs docking compartment to the Zarya module to prepare Pirs for its eventual replacement with a new Russian multipurpose laboratory module. The two spacewalking cosmonauts also installed micrometeoroid debris shields on the exterior of the Zvezda service module and deployed a small science satellite.

S119-E-007165 (23 March 2009) --- Astronaut Joseph Acaba, STS-119 mission specialist, participates in the mission's third scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 27-minute spacewalk, Acaba and Richard Arnold (out of frame), mission specialist, helped robotic arm operators relocate the Crew Equipment Translation Aid (CETA) cart from the Port 1 to Starboard 1 truss segment, installed a new coupler on the CETA cart, lubricated snares on the "B" end of the space station's robotic arm and performed a few "get ahead" tasks.

S119-E-006875 (21 March 2009) --- Astronaut Steve Swanson, STS-119 mission specialist, participates in the mission's second scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 30-minute spacewalk Swanson and astronaut Joseph Acaba (out of frame), mission specialist, prepared a worksite so the STS-127 spacewalkers can more easily change out the Port 6 truss batteries later this year. On the Japanese Kibo laboratory they installed a second Global Positioning Satellite antenna that will be used for the planned rendezvous of the Japanese HTV cargo ship in September. They photographed areas of radiator panels extended from the Port 1 and Starboard 1 trusses and reconfigured connectors at a patch panel on the Zenith 1 truss that power Control Moment Gyroscopes.

S123-E-008509 (22 March 2008) --- Astronaut Robert L. Behnken, STS-123 mission specialist, participates in the mission's fifth and final scheduled session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the spacewalk, Behnken and astronaut Mike Foreman (out of frame), mission specialist, attached the shuttle's Orbiter Boom Sensor System (OBSS) to the S1 truss on the station, released launch locks on two of the Harmony module's common berthing mechanisms and install trunnion covers on the Japanese Logistics Module -- Pressurized Section. The spacewalkers also performed other tasks including an inspection of the starboard Solar Alpha Rotary Joint (SARJ) and installed the Materials International Space Station Experiment 6 (MISSE-6) on the outside of the European Space Agency's Columbus laboratory (top). S133-E-007364 (28 Feb. 2011) --- NASA astronauts Steve Bowen and Alvin Drew, both STS-133 mission specialists, participate in the missions first session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the six-hour, 34-minute spacewalk, Bowen and Drew installed the J612 power extension cable, move a failed ammonia pump module to the External Stowage Platform 2 on the Quest Airlock for return to Earth at a later date, installed a camera wedge on the right hand truss segment, installed extensions to the mobile transporter rail and exposed the Japanese Message in a Bottle experiment to space.

The two NASA astronauts began the 5-hour, 30-minute space walk at 8:44 a.m.

ISS011-E-11344 (30 July 2005) --- This image of the cargo bay of the Space Shuttle Discovery was taken with a digital still camera onboard the International Space Station, to which the orbiter will continue to be docked for several days. There is a vacancy in the payload bay, as the Multi-Purpose Logistics Module Raffaello temporarily has been docked with the orbital outpost's Unity Node in order to accommodate thetransfer of a large amount of supplies.

ISS038-E-022911 (27 Dec. 2013) --- Russian cosmonaut Sergey Ryazanskiy, Expedition 38 flight engineer, attired in a Russian Orlan spacesuit, participates in a session of extravehicular activity (EVA) in support of assembly and maintenance on the International Space Station. During the eight-hour, seven-minute spacewalk, Ryazanskiy and Russian cosmonaut Oleg Kotov (out of frame), commander, worked with two high-fidelity cameras, removed the Vsplesk experiment package and jettisoned it and replaced it with hardware for a more sophisticated earthquake-monitoring experiment, Seismoprognoz, which they attached to a Zvezda handrail.

S130-E-007510 (11 Feb. 2010) --- NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Nicholas Patrick (partially obscured at left), both STS-130 mission specialists, participate in the mission's first session of extravehicular activity (EVA) as construction and maintenance continue on the International Space Station. During the 6-hour, 32-minute spacewalk, Behnken and Patrick relocated a temporary platform from the Special Purpose Dexterous Manipulator, or Dextre, to the stations truss structure and installed two handles on the robot. Once Tranquility was structurally mated to Unity, the spacewalkers connected heater and data cables that will integrate the new module with the rest of the stations systems. They also pre-positioned insulation blankets and ammonia hoses that will be used to connect Tranquility to the stations cooling radiators during the missions second spacewalk.

ISS034-E-060222 (3 March 2013) --- This is one of a series of photos taken by the Expedition 34 crew members aboard the International Space Station during the March 3 approach, capture and docking of the SpaceX Dragon. Thus the spacecraft begins its scheduled three-week-long stay at the orbiting space station.

NASA astronaut Raja Chari is pictured tethered to the International Space Station during a six-hour and 54-minute spacewalk to set up the orbital lab for its next roll-out solar array.

S130-E-008517 (16 Feb. 2010) --- In the grasp of the Canadarm2, the Pressurized Mating Adapter 3 (PMA-3) is relocated from the Harmony node to the open port on the end of the newly-installed Tranquility node. NASA astronauts Robert Behnken and Nicholas Patrick, both STS-130 mission specialists, operated the stations robotic arm for the move, while Jeffrey Williams, Expedition 22 commander; and Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency (JAXA) astronaut Soichi Noguchi, Expedition 22 flight engineer, dealt with latches and bolts, connecting the port to its new home.
