Eileen was so tired after her £1,000 prize-winning effort that a waiting B.B.C. commentator was unable to interview her. By her great swim, the Yorkshire girl raises British prestige in the sporting world.Winner of the Marathon race was the Egyptian swimmer Hassan Abd ***** Behim, who weighs 16 stone. His time of 10 hours 52 minutes sets up a new record for the Channel crossing. Previous best was 11 hours 5 min., achieved by a Frenchmen in 1926. August 22, 1950.

Crowds' All Night To See Test -- Bradman thumbs the pitch and Yardley tries the wicket with his foot the wicket with his foot at the Oval today (Sat.). About 5,000 people had already formed a queue at the Oval by 8 am today (Sat.) for the fifth Test Match. Under grey skies they formed two queues on either side of the main turnstiles. Most of the fans started to form up just after 5 am many of whom had spent the night in the open. The British Organising committee for the summer Olympics have disclosed that revolutionary equipment for track and field events is to be used.
