ISS007-E-10974 (27 July 2003) --- Photographed by an Expedition 7 crewmember onboard the International Space Station (ISS), this image shows the limb of the Earth at the bottom transitioning into the orange-colored troposphere, the lowest and most dense portion of the Earth's atmosphere. The troposphere ends abruptly at the tropopause, which appears in the image as the sharp boundary between the orange- and blue- colored atmosphere. The silvery-blue noctilucent clouds extend far above the Earth's troposphere. The sliver of the setting moon is visible at upper right.

A circumpolar star trail stack taken from the Table Mountain Star Party, July 26, 2014, at the Eden Valley Guest Ranch. This is a stack created from 250 frames taken for a time-lapse movie, stacked using Advanced Stacker Actions with "Elastic Stars" effect. Each frame was 45 seconds at f/2.8 with the Rokinon 14mm lens and Canon 6D at ISO 2000.

The white lights are the glow from the computer screens, the red light is from the astronomers' lights to preserve night vision. Overhead is the core of the Milky Way in the constellations of Scorpio and Sagittarius; the Rho Ophiuchus nebulosity is the upper right. Digtially composited.

ISS041-E-013683 (13 Sept. 2014) --- Photographed with a mounted automated camera, this is one of a number of images featuring the European Space Agencys Automated Transfer Vehicle (ATV-5 or Georges Lemaitre) docked with the International Space Station. Except for color changes, the images are almost identical. The variation in color from frame to frame is due to the cameras response to the motion of the orbital outpost, relative to the illumination from the sun.

Auroras are created by energetic electrons, which rain down from Earths magnetic bubble and interact with particles in the upper atmosphere to create glowing lights that stretch across the sky. The BARREL team is at Esrange Space Center near Kiruna, Sweden, launching a series of six scientific payloads on miniature scientific balloons. The NASA-funded BARREL - which stands for Balloon Array for Radiation-belt Relativistic Electron Losses - primarily measures X-rays in Earths atmosphere near the North and South Poles. These X-rays are produced by electrons raining down into the atmosphere from two giant swaths of radiation that surround Earth, called the Van Allen belts. Learning about the radiation near Earth helps us to better protect our satellites. STS101-S-015 (19 May 2000) --- Flames from the solid rocket boosters light up the clouds of smoke and steam trailing behind Space Shuttle Atlantis as it lifts off into the pre-dawn sky on mission STS-101. Liftoff occurred on time at 6:11:10 a.m. (EDT), May 19, 2000. The mission is taking the crew of seven to the International Space Station to deliver logistics and supplies as well as to prepare the Station for the arrival of the Zvezda Service Module, expected to be launched by Russia in July 2000. Also, the crew will conduct one space walk and will reboost the space station from 230 statute miles to 250 statute miles. This will be the third assembly flight to the Space Station. After a 10-day mission, landing is targeted for May 29 at 2:19 a.m. (EDT). This is the 98th Shuttle flight and the 21st flight for Shuttle Atlantis.

The Soyuz launch pad an hour before the arrival of the Soyuz rocket. The Soyuz TMA-5 vehicle rolled to its launch pad at the Baikonur Cosmodrome in Kazakhstan, Tuesday, October 12, 2004, in preparation for its launch October 14 to send Expedition 10 Commander and NASA Science Officer Leroy Chiao, Flight Engineer and Soyuz Commander Salizhan Sharipov and Russian Space Forces cosmonaut Yuri Shargin to the International Space Station. Chiao and Sharipov will replace the Expedition 9 crew of Gennady Padalka and Mike Fincke, while Shargin will conduct eight days of scientific experiments. He will return to earth with the Expedition 9 crew October 24.

CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. - Contrails from the launch of space shuttle Discovery on the STS-131 mission glow in rainbow colors in the early morning hours as the sun rises over the Vehicle Assembly Building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida. Shuttle Discovery lifted off at 6 21 a.m. EDT on April 5, 2010. The seven-member STS-131 crew will deliver the multi-purpose logistics module Leonardo, filled with supplies, a new crew sleeping quarters and science racks that will be transferred to the International Space Station's laboratories. The crew also will switch out a gyroscope on the stations truss, install a spare ammonia storage tank and retrieve a Japanese experiment from the stations exterior. STS-131 is the 33rd shuttle mission to the station and the 131st shuttle mission overall.
