A memorial wreath stands before the Space Mirror Memorial at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex during this years Day of Remembrance ceremony. The memorial, a 42-foot-high by 50-foot-wide granite monument, displays the names of the fallen astronauts from Apollo 1, space shuttles Challenger and Columbia, as well as others who have lost their lives while on NASA missions or in training. Each year, Kennedy employees and guests gather with others throughout NASA to honor those astronauts who have fallen in the pursuit of space exploration.

A bouquet of roses, left to remember the dead, adorns the Vietnam Veterans Memorial in Washington, D.C., Sept. 17, 2014. In the background is the wreath honoring Spc. 4 Donald P. Sloat who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor earlier this week. Day of Remembrance 2023. Sheryl Chafee, Astronauts Memorial Foundation (AMF) Board of Directors chairperson, at right, accompanied by NASA Associate Administrator Bob Cabana, and Kennedy Space Director Janet Petro, lay a wreath in front of the Space Mirror Memorial during the Day of Remembrance on Jan. 26, 2023, at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex in Florida. In the Heroes and Legends exhibit at the Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex, a guest pays respect to former NASA astronaut Richard Gordon. A memorial wreath was placed following a ceremony to honor the memory of Gordon who performed two spacewalks during Gemini XI in 1966 and served as command module pilot on Apollo 12 in 1969. Garrison Commander Col. Reid E. Furman commemorated the 40th anniversary of the Chinook Crash in Mannheim. On Sept. 11, 1982, a Chinook helicopter departing from the Mannheim Airfield crash landed on the Federal Highway 656 while on a demonstration jump in recognition of the 375th anniversary of the awarding of city rights to Mannheim. 46 passengers died including 23 French, nine British, six Germans, and eight Americans, including the five-person crew and two AFN reporters. KENNEDY SPACE CENTER, FLA. -- A visitor at NASA's Kennedy Space Center Visitor Complex photographs the special memorial for the seven crew members of Columbia who were lost as they returned from mission STS-107 in 2003. Kennedy marked the NASA Day of Remembrance with special ceremonies. This year the crew of Columbia was remembered in a special way on the day that marked the fifth anniversary of the Columbia accident.

Veterans Memorial Plaza is shown Nov. 17, 2022, at the Commemorative Area at Fort McCoy, Wis. It was the last day of 2022 where the flags were still posted at the plaza and it was a snow-filled day. The 900 block of Fort McCoy and the 11-acre area surrounding it are at the hub of the forts history-preservation efforts and is called the Commemorative Area. The Commemorative Area consists of five World War II-era buildings set aside to help tell Fort McCoy's unique story. These facilities are representative of the types found in the cantonment area when it was constructed in 1942. Three of the buildings an administrative facility, a dining facility, and a barracks are set up to depict Soldier life during the 1940s. Display items include a World War II chapel, bunk beds, footlockers, mannequins, and potbelly stoves. The three-minutes of silence is in respect and honor to those who perished during the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Centers Twin Towers and the Pentagon. The three-minutes of silence observed all over the United Kingdom, where daily lives stopped, as they paid respect to the fallen. CAPE CANAVERAL, Fla. -- Kennedy Space Center Employees and guests placed wreaths and flowers at the Space Mirror Memorial at the spaceport's Visitor Complex during NASA's Day of Remembrance. The annual event took place on the 10th anniversary of the loss of the space shuttle Columbia and its crew and was hosted by the Astronauts Memorial Foundation. The ceremony also honored the astronauts of Apollo 1, who perished in 1967, and the shuttle Challenger, lost in 1986, as well as other astronauts who lost their lives while furthering the cause of exploration and discovery. Dedicated in 1991, the names of fallen astronauts are emblazoned the monument's 4.5-foot-high-by-50-foot-wide polished black granite surface which reflects the sky and has been designated by Congress as a National Memorial.
