For many, the double-waisted profile of the classic “Confucian style" qin is the most familiar of the twelve or so that appear. This example known as a "banana leaf style" ( ??) or Jiaoye pattern, is a popular variation taking its name from its undulating sides. Other construction elements like the 13 mother-of-pearl buttons (hui) that indicate finger positions remain the same. Two inscriptions, one referencing the owner's discovery of the instrument in 1872 and its restoration, the other relating the story of Zhong Ziqi and Yu Boya appear on the back along with a seal bearing the instrument's name, "Xiangpu's Treasure".. Viols were the most esteemed bowed instruments of the late Renaissance, and only gradually displaced by the violin family in the eighteenth century. Viols feature flat backs, sloping shoulders, and six or seven strings, all features which distinguish them from members of the violin family. All viols are played in an upright position between the knees, or da gamba ("at the leg"), and the bow is held palm upwards. Their sound is quieter and less brilliant than that of the violin family, yet considered more pleasing to the ear by Renaissance humanists. Chamber music for consorts of four to six viols was composed during the Renaissance and Baroque eras, and solo works for the bass viol were played until nearly the end of the 18th century.. Towards the end of the 18th century most Spanish guitars had longer necks relative to the scale-length, in this case the guitar has a shorter body, accentuating the curves of the sides as a consequence. These accentuated curves would become an increasingly popular feature in early 19th-century guitar making in Madrid. Although the head and bridge are replacements, there is no reason to suppose that this was ever anything other than a six-course guitar. Viols have frets on their fingerboards, a feature that endeared the viol to amateur players then and now. All sizes of viols are played upright either between the legs or resting on them, and the bow is held underhand, so that the stronger bow stroke is the up bow, unlike the violin, whose more powerful motion is the down bow.
