This 1912 image by J M Gleeson illustrates Kipling's How the alphabet was made. Neolithic man Tegumai Bopsulai is out fishing with his daughter Taffy. They talk about the episode in "How the First Letter was written", when Taffy's attempt to send a message in a drawing led to complete misunderstanding. Taffy suggests a way of representing the sounds of the Tegumai language in pictograms. Together she and her father evolve a system using familiar objects and facial expressions, which when simplified become letters of the alphabet. The system was adopted and improved for thousands of years and now all children should learn the alphabet as soon as they are old enough. Joseph Rudyard Kipling (1936) was an English journalist, short-story writer, poet, and novelist. He was born in British India, which inspired much of his work. Kipling's works of fiction include the Jungle Book dilogy, Kim, the Just So Stories (published 1902) and many short stories, including The Man Who Would Be King. Jos

Florine Stettheimer captured the dynamic social worlds of her intimate circle of family and friends, many of whom were artists and members of New Yorks avant-garde. This whimsical portrait was inspired by a birthday celebration for Stettheimers mother at the familys summer retreat in Bedford Hills, New York. Stettheimers interest in theater and set design is apparent through the arrangement of a stagelike space composed of horizontal bands of color. The blazing hues, coupled with the lithe bodies of the women and the wilted tree branches in the background, evoke the summer heat described in the paintings title. American Art 1919

He terrorized the area and had taken wives of three princes. This illustration shows the youngest rince saving a princess from being killed by a serpent.
