Gaochang is the site of an ancient oasis city built on the northern rim of the inhospitable Taklamakan Desert in Xinjiang, China. A busy trading center, it was a stopping point for merchant traders traveling on the Silk Road. The ruins are located 30 km southeast of modern Turpan. Gaochang is called Karakhoja or Qarakhoja in Uighur. The archaeological site is also known in early published reports as Chotscho, Khocho, or Qoao.

Fragment of a sleeve. Natural fragment of a sleeve with two sewn decorative edges. The upper with a decoration on a red ground from two horses to each other with back dressing archery, between which a medallion with head with Nimbus. Top and bottom is an edge of squares in red, orange, blue and natural color and a wavy motif with stylized leaves in dark green, orange and dark blue. The lower fragment has a nice tendrilse motif in natural, dark blue, light blue, green and yellow. Central at the top and left and bottom right are triangular motifs with stylized leaves in green, dark blue, orange and natural color.

The Mogao Caves, or Mogao Grottoes (Chinese: Mògāo kū) (also known as the Caves of the Thousand Buddhas and Dunhuang Caves) form a system of 492 temples 25 km (15.5 miles) southeast of the center of Dunhuang, an oasis strategically located at a religious and cultural crossroads on the Silk Road, in Gansu province, China. The caves contain some of the finest examples of Buddhist art spanning a period of 1,000 years. The first caves were dug out 366 CE as places of Buddhist meditation and worship. The Mogao Caves are the best known of the Chinese Buddhist grottoes and, along with Longmen Grottoes and Yungang Grottoes, are one of the three famous ancient sculptural sites of China. The caves also have famous wall paintings.

Lions from a Tunic, c. 800's. Egypt, Islamic Abbasid period, 8th - 9th Century. Tapestry weave with supplementary weft wrapping; undyed linen and dyed wool; overall: 23 x 23 cm (9 1/16 x 9 1/16 in.); mounted: 29.2 x 29.2 cm (11 1/2 x 11 1/2 in.). The royal lions and jeweled border in this colorful roundel, originally from a tunic, conveyed power and wealth. The symmetrical design with lions and ducks flanking the central palmette (fan-shaped plant form) indicates that the pattern was copied from a costlier silk textile woven on a loom that automatically repeated the design in mirror-image symmetry.

The Kingdom of Yanqi (Karashar) was an ancient Buddhist kingdom located on the branch of the Silk Route that ran along the northern edge of the Taklamakan Desert in the Tarim Basin. During the Han dynasty it was a relatively large and important kingdom. According to Hanshu, the various states of the Western Regions, including Yanqi, were controlled by the Xiongnu, but later came under the influence of the Han Dynasty after its show of force when it attacked Dayuan (Fergana) late 2nd century BCE. According to Hou Hanshu, General Ban Chao went on a punitive campaign against Yanqi in 94 CE after they attacked and killed the Protector General Chen Mu and Vice Commandant Guo Xun in 75 CE. The king of Yanqi was decapitated and his head displayed in the capital. Later rebellions were subdued by Ban Chao's son Ban Yong in 127.

Scarab Inscribed for the God's Wife Hatshepsut ca. 1479-1458 B.C. New Kingdom This scarab was found in a foundation deposit associated with Hatshepsut's funerary temple at Deir el-Bahri. The base is inscribed with her personal name, Hatshepsut ("foremost of noblewomen") linked with the title God's Wife. Hatshepsut inherited the title while she served as principal queen of her half-brother, Thutmose II. Later in her life, after taking on the titles of King, Hatshepsut passed the title to her daughter, Neferure (see scarab 27.3.326).. Three Textile Fragments in Two Mounts 14th century Although the original textile survives only in fragments, enough pieces in The Mets collection allow for a proper reconstruction (see also 1979.462.2). Two bands alternate through the ground of this turquoise and navy silk: one which consists of pairs of facing split-palmettes, a motif that was common from Turkey to Egypt during the 12th-14th centuries; and the other which is dominated by a series of lozenges framing the truncated form of the word al-sultan, the title bestowed upon rulers. Both the medium of silk and the royal title of Sultan indicates that these fragments can be associated with the highest form of Mamluk patronage. Three Textile Fragments in Two Mounts. 14th century. Tile with water flowers in a canal ca. 1279-1213 B.C. New Kingdom, Ramesside This tile once decorated the palace of Ramesses II in Piramesse, which he made into one of the greatest royal cities of ancient Egypt. Thanks to the royal favor and its strategic location, Piramesse soon became an important international trade center and a cosmopolitan metropolis, boasting a harbor, a military base, and temples dedicated to various gods like Amun-Re-Harakhty-Atum, Seth, Astarte, etc. Poems were written in the city's praise, and its name, which translates as "The House of Ramesses, Beloved of Amun, Great of Victories" when fully written, came to us through the Old Testament as Raamses.’ The tiles bear the names of Seti I, Ramesses II and later Ramesside kings, who renovated the palace and changed its decoration through the reigns. 8 of Tethers, from The Cloisters Playing Cards ca. 1475-80 South Netherlandish The Cloisters set of fifty-two cards constitutes the only known complete deck of illuminated ordinary playing cards (as opposed to tarot cards) from the fifteenth century. There are four suits, each consisting of a king, queen, knave, and ten pip cards. The suit symbols, based on equipment associated with the hunt, are hunting horns, dog collars, hound tethers, and game nooses. The value of the pip cards is indicated by appropriate repetitions of the suit symbol. The figures, which appear to be based on Franco-Flemish models, were drawn in a bold, free, and engaging, if somewhat unrefined, hand. Their exaggerated and sometimes anachronistic costumes suggest a lampoon of extravagant Burgundian court fashions. Although some period card games are named, it is not known how they were played.
