Quilt, Presentation pattern ca. 1849 Designs attributed to Mary Hergenroder Simon This Baltimore Presentation quilt is appliquéd with vibrant floral wreaths, a delicate basket of fruits and flowers, and assorted birds in multicolored cottons. It is most likely the work of Mary Simon (born 1810), who is thought to have worked as a professional quiltmaker in Baltimore during the 1840s and 1850s. The designs on the quilt are separate bits of brightly colored fabric. Since this quilt was made completely by one person, most likely to commemorate a specific occasion, it is best described as a Presentation quilt rather than an Album quilt, in which blocks would have been made by a group of quiltmakers. Because the quilt came to the Museum without a provenance, the circumstances of its commission are unknown.. Quilt, Presentation pattern 13875

Blue-ground Carpet Fragment with Scrolling Floral Vines. Dimensions: Rug: H. 54 1/8 in. (137.5 cm)W. 53 5/8 in. (136.2 cm). Date: 17th century.This fragment of a carpet bears a variety of flowers on winding stems over a blue ground. Its structure, which is composed of two planes of warp threads, indicates that it was probably produced in the city of Kirman in southeastern Iran. Carpets from this city display a wide range of patterns but are alike in construction. Exported to India during the reign of Emperor Akbar (r. 1556-1605), Kirman carpets were known to be among the finest produced in Iran during this period. Fragment, Medium: silk Technique: two integrated fabric structures, 5-harness satin patterned by plain weave (lampas), Satin ground vertically striped in rose-red, orange-red, dark blue, green and white. A broad rosy-red stripe at left has a large-scale Arabic inscription in yellow (the fabric must be turned 90 degrees in order to read the Islamic inscription). The central white stripe has geometric knot-like design in red (so badly worn that design is almost indistinguishable); the dark blue stripe on the right has arabesques in yellow and red. Velvet Panel with Hunting Scene ca. 1540 This polylobed velvet panel is from the interior of a tent used by Kara Mustapha Pasha, an Ottoman military leader, during the siege of Vienna (1683); the tent is said to have been captured by the Austrians as war booty. Produced in a royal workshop in Iran, it may have been acquired by the Turkish as a gift or through trade. The Safavid court favored figurative velvets that depicted hunting, a recreational passion of Persian royalty. Here, this theme is delicately drawn and the velvet owes its supple quality to the density and complexity of the weave structure.. Velvet Panel with Hunting Scene 452413

Textile Fragment 15th century This silk textile shows pairs of confronting coroneted lions on either side of a stylized tree, enclosed by swooping crimson-colored split palmette leaves and set against a green ground. The lions have been compared to a Granadine textile bearing Nasrid heraldic emblems and rampant lions, which possibly served as the model. Variants of this pattern, depicting slightly different plant forms or animals suggest that these textiles were mass-produced. Date: ca. 1892.A key figure in the Aesthetic movement, New York-born artist Lockwood de Forest (1850-1932) was very inspired by Indian arts and crafts, and created the Ahmedabad Woodcarving Company in Gujarat, which exported many items to the United States. These cut and chased brass cutouts, designed by de Forest, were based on examples found in wood, plaster, and stone in Indian architecture. In his designs, they would have been used as ornament on architecture or furniture. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Lotus-blossom petal canopy, 1500s-early 1600s. Probably eastern India. Lampas: silk; overall: 186.7 x 175.7 cm (73 1/2 x 69 3/16 in.). This is the most spectacular early Indian silk that has survived, dating from the 16th century during the Muslim Sultanate period. Six concentric circles of lotus petals alternate with foliate motifs while mythical fighting animalsshown surrounded by flames or foliagea green eight-legged creature attacking a yellow hybrid-lionenliven the corners, all framed by a sinuous leaf border in brilliant colors. The imagery reflects a pan-Indian style with Hindu, Buddhist, and Muslim elements. This rare silk appears to be the central section of a larger canopy. The interrupted border pattern suggests there was additional fabric at each end. Luxurious canopies were essential accouterments of rulers, displayed as conspicuous symbols of power and wealth while also providing welcome shade.

Sarasa with Figures, Birds, and Fantastic Animals late 17th-early 18th century India (Coromandel Coast), for the Japanese market This extremely rare sarasaIndian painted cotton produced for the Japanese marketoffers an Indian version of an Oriental fantasy. The unparalleled design includes whimsical figures and fanciful creatures in a lush forest. In each repeat, figures carry palanquins (covered litters) and hold umbrella canopies. The dark ground evokes late seventeenth-century Chinese lacquer screens. Its overtly Oriental flavor represents an Indian interpretation of chinoiserie, which itself developed from European reinterpretations of motifs found on decorative art objects imported from China.cat. no. 33.
