Theatrical Jacket and Skirt for a Warrior, Kangxi period, 1662-1722, L.52-1/8 in., satin, China, 17th-18th century, Like most theatrical costumes, this colorful two-piece military outfit is an exaggeration of real-life apparel. Elaborate studwork, metal-wrapped threads that are stitched onto the silk, and padded applique lion masks adorn the shoulders and waist, simulating riveted plate armor. The costume is one of several purchased during the 1920s from the stock of a theater within the emperors court compound, the Forbidden City.

(67.79 x 72.39 cm), Cotton, dye, United States, 20th century, The Seminole are divided into two groups; one group that currently lives in Oklahoma as a result of President Andrew Jackson's relocating the tribe, and another group that stayed in the Southeast region. The group that currently lives in the Southeast region created this shirt. In 1910 this style of shirt, known as the Big Shirt, replaced a style that was known as the Long Shirt. This type of shirt would have been worn only by men or boys, and later worn by men of high stature.

Manchu Woman's Semiformal Court Robe, early 18th century, L.55 1/2 in., back seam, Silk brocade and embroidered satin, China, 18th century, The color and decoration of early eighteenth-century court robes were strictly regulated. The robes are distinguished by large dragons and the prominent mountain and spiral wave patterns of their hems. The mountains, clouds, waves, and dragons comprised a celestial landscape symbolic of universal order and the imperial court, which carried out the heavenly mandate on earth. Imperial dragon imagery was also standard in the designs of cuffs and collar bands of most court robes.

Cloak (Kaitaka aronui) mid-19th century Maori people This magnificent Maori cloak from New Zealand is a singular example of the genre known as kaitaka aronui and features wefts which run in a horizontal direction when worn. The main body of the cloak is broadly rectangular, flaring out gently to each side at the bottom. Soft and supple to the touch, a series of extra seams are ingeniously woven into the main body (kaupapa) of the cloak creating darts that enable the cloak to rest comfortably on the shoulders when worn. The lower border of the cloak is decorated with a wide woven tniko border. This distinctly Maori technique of finger-twining used traditionally dyed fibers highlighted with touches of brightly colored wool yarns, and was an innovation born out of early interaction with Europeans. Robe, 20th century, L.40-1/4 in., silk, China, 20th century, Distinguished by its gold tapestry ground, this garment displays the 'one hundred children' theme, which can be found on porcelain, lacquer, and paintings as well as textiles, especially those associated with the marriage ceremony. Since the Manchu ethnic group avoided figural imagery on these garments, this type of subject matter is found almost exclusively in the clothing and pictorial hanging of the Han Chinese.

Theatrical Robe for a Male Role. Culture: China. Dimensions: Overall: 55 3/8 x 89 1/4 in. (140.7 x 226.7 cm). Date: second half of the18th century.This theatrical robe was designed to be worn by an elite male on a casual occasion. Its original form was derived from a long jacket of the Ming dynasty (1368-1644). It is beautifully embroidered using the needlepoint technique and is similar in color and pattern to Qing court theatrical costumes, now at the Palace Museum, Beijing. Date: ca. 1940s.This luxurious and rare woman's propaganda kimono appears to have been custom-made by a couture designer for a wealthy patron. The elegant black silk robe has abstract vignettes woven with gold thread and colored yarns (kasuri, an ikat technique that employs a resist-dyeing process on the yarns) of the Hinomaru (Rising Sun) flag of Japan, fighter planes, bombers, the crenellations of the Great Wall of China, and barbed wire on wood x-frames. Festival coat with dragon Japan A tiger accompanies the bold dragon on this jacket. The dragon appears in the clouds above waves, and the tiger gambols among sprigs of bamboo; both associations originated in China. The front of the jacket features pine, plum blossoms, and bamboo, plants that occur together in the Chinese tradition as the auspicious "three friends in winter" because they bloom or remain green even in the cold. It is thought that a similar jacket may have been worn for a festival or regional theatrical performance in the San'in district located on the Japan Sea side of the main Japanese island of Honshu..
