Samurai is the term for the military nobility of pre-industrial Japan. By the end of the 12th century, samurai became almost entirely synonymous with bushi, and the word was closely associated with the middle and upper echelons of the warrior class. The samurai followed a set of rules that came to be known as Bushidō. While they numbered less than ten percent of Japan's population, samurai teachings can still be found today in both everyday life and in martial arts such as Kendō, meaning the way of the sword.

The Historical Buddha Preaching,” a section from The Illustrated Sutra of Past and Present Karma (Kako genzai inga ky? emaki) mid-8th century Unidentified artist The sutra to which this section of text and images once belonged narrates the life of the historical Buddha, known in Japanese as Shaka and in Sanskrit as Shakyamuni. Here the Buddha has already achieved enlightenment, demonstrated by the halo (mandorla) framing his head. He is preaching a message to King Bimbisara (558-491 B.C.), who became emperor of the Magadha Empire, in northern India, and an ardent supporter of Buddhist teachings.With its primitive evocation of threedimensionality, suggested through a succession of receding contour lines and alternating passages of light and dark color, this vignette from the life of Buddha is the earliest example of East Asian painting in The Met collection.. Date: early 19th century.Monk Shunso, a pupil of Reigen and Suio, followed in the tradition of these and others in the lineage of Hakuin Ekaku in creating dynamically brushed images of famous Zen figures. Here he has depicted the emiment early-medieval monk Daito Kokushi (Shuho Myocho, 1283-1337) in the guise of a beggar in a straw cloak and tattered sedge hat. The monk lived as a recluse for many years in Kyoto, taking refuge under Gojo Bridge. Daito Kokushi ultimately established his legacy by founding Daitokuji in Kyoto, the great monastic complex of Rinzai Zen Buddhism. Hakuin considered Daito Kokushi to be the head of lineage and thus painted many images of him; Shunso followed in this tradition. Museum: Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, USA.

Scroll 9 of Collected Iconography (Zuzsh): Ten (Devas) 13th century Japan Sketchlike drawings of Buddhist deities in ink and/or light colors played a vital role in transmitting the complex iconography of the multitude of deities who make up the Mikky (Esoteric) pantheon. As it is identified on the outside of the scroll, this work contains images of the deva kings (ten in Japanese). Also inscribed on the outside is the scroll's provenance—Kanchi-in, a subtemple of Tji in Kyoto, an especially rich depository of Esoteric Buddhist images. Included in the scroll are images and descriptions of twenty-four deities, including Shitenn, the guardians of the four cardinal directions, and Jniten, the Twelve Deva Kings. The deities are identified in the texts preceding their images, which give their names in Chinese characters, their Sanskrit names, seed letters symbolizing their particular virtues, and their special attributes. Xuanzang ( Wade-Giles: Hsüan-tsang, c. 602 - 664) was a famous Chinese Buddhist monk, scholar, traveler, and translator who described the interaction between China and India in the early Tang period. Born in Henan province of China in 602 or 603, from boyhood he took to reading sacred books, including the Chinese Classics and the writings of the ancient sages. While residing in the city of Luoyang, Xuanzang entered Buddhist monkhood at the age of thirteen. Due to the political and social unrest caused by the fall of the Sui dynasty, he went to Chengdu in Sichuan, where he was ordained at the age of twenty. From Xingdu, he travelled throughout China in search of sacred books of Buddhism. At length, he came to Chang'an, then under the peaceful rule of Emperor Taizong of Tang. Here Xuanzang developed the desire to visit India. He knew about Faxian's visit to India and, like him, was concerned about the incomplete and misinterpreted nature of the Buddhist scriptures that reached China. He

The revenge of the Forty-seven Ronin (Shi-ju-shichi-shi), also known as the Forty-seven Samurai, the Aki vendetta, or the Genroku Aki incident (Genroku aki jiken) took place in Japan at the start of the 18th century. One noted Japanese scholar described the tale as the country's 'national legend'. It recounts the most famous case involving the samurai code of honor, bushidi. The story tells of a group of samurai who were left leaderless (becoming ronin) after their daimyo (feudal lord) Asano Naganori was forced to commit seppuku (ritual suicide) for assaulting a court official named Kira Yoshinaka, whose title was Ki zuke no suke. The ronin avenged their master's honor after patiently waiting and planning for two years to kill Kira. In turn, the ronin were themselves ordered to commit seppuku for committing the crime of murder. Detail of the seventh section of the Hungry Ghosts Scroll located at the Kyoto National Museum. The scroll depicts the world of the hungry ghosts, one of the six realms of Buddhism and contains tales of salvation of the hungry ghosts. This particular section tells how Ananda, a disciple of Shakyamuni, passed on the method of salvation which was recounted in the sixth section of the same scroll. It shows monks offering food and drink to the spirits of the dead. The whole scroll has been designated a National Treasure of Japan in the category paintings. It was possibly part of a set of scrolls depicting the six realms which was kept at Sanjusangen-do.

Fujin or Futen is the Japanese god of the wind and one of the eldest Shinto gods. He is generally depicted as a terrifying wizard-like demon carrying a large bag of winds on his shoulders. In Japanese art, the deity is often depicted together with Raijin, the god of lightning, thunder and storms.

The poems describe the friendly hermit as wearing simple clothing and living a carefree life as a wanderer on Cold Mountain ('Hanshan'). Here, an unkempt Hanshan is shown sitting cross-legged, holding a brush beneath a tree tangled with vines. The inkstone and scroll on the ground beside him identify him as a poet.

A hanging scroll (Chinese: 軸; pinyin: lìzhóu; also called 軸 or 掛軸) is one of the many traditional ways to display and exhibit Chinese painting and calligraphy.
