German-born photographer and scholar Max Hutzel (1911-1988) photographed in Italy from the early 1960s until his death. The result of this project, referred to by Hutzel as Foto Arte Minore, is thorough documentation of art historical development in Italy up to the 18th century, including objects of the Etruscans and the Romans, as well as early Medieval, Romanesque, Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque monuments. Gabriel Syveton (1864 - 1904),French historian and politician. founding member of the patriotic and anti-Dreyfus Ligue de la patrie Francaise. involved in scandal when he exposed the existence of a card file compiled from Freemason reports on public officials. He died, apparently from suicide, before being required to appear in court after physically attacking the Minister of War in the Chamber of Deputies. Syveton was found dead in his office by his wife on 8 December 1904

Ralph Waldo Emerson (1803-1882) was an American essayist, lecturer, and poet. He led the Transcendentalist movement in the mid-19th century. Among his best-known essays are 'Nature' and 'Self-Reliance.' He was a friend of Henry David Thoreau. Pictured here is the library in his home in Concord, Massachusetts. For two years he lived in a cabin in Concord by what is known today as Walden Pond.
