He served as a US Senator from New York, US Attorney General under Preident Andrew Johnson, and US Secretary of State under Rutherford B. Hayes. Evarts represent the renowned clergyman Henry Ward Beecher. Evarts led the fund raising efforts for a pedestal for the Statue of Liberty. He served as chief counsel for Andrew Johnson at his impeachment trial.

William Henry Seward (died 1872) was an American politician who served as United States Secretary of State from 1861 to 1869, and earlier served as governor of New York and as a United States Senator. Seward was appointed Secretary of State by Abraham Lincoln on March 5, 1861, and served until March 4, 1869. Seward carefully managed international affairs during the Civil War and also negotiated the 1867 purchase of Alaska.
