He Battered 'Iron Man' To Defeat:Watching Don Cockell batter Mark Hart to defeat in fourteen rounds was like seeing a blacksmith - Don's former trade - incessantly smiting an anvil. Hart must indeed have had iron in his heart and body to withstand the terrific two-handed punishment which he absorbed from the Battorsea boy in every round. Then Cockell won the light-heavy-weight title by knocking out the game Mark Hart, of Croydon, in the fourteenth round. There was a short-lived burst of energy from Hart in the thirteenth, but Cockell slammed into him in the fourteenth. An uppercut followed by the one - two to the head put hart down for nine. He Struggled up only to be knocked out. October 18, 1950.

'The Cup' Can End Farce of Boxers Winning on the Floor. One of the most disgusting sights in British boxing is a boxer grimacing and writhing on the floor of the ring. It is bad enough when a blow beneath the belt has put the man down in considerable pain. It is worse when the boxer is putting on an act pretending to have been hit low and hurt, and imitates the reactions of a man really in agony in the hope of getting the decision. Boxers have a name for this - "winning on the floor'. Some provincial promoters are campaigning for the British Boxing Board of Control to consider the introduction of the no-foul belt. Goodman was dropped by a vicious body blow after two minutes of the sixth round. He tried to struggle to his feet but just failed to eat the count. Twenty-year-old Don Cockell, Elephant and castle blacksmith, looks like being our brightest cruiser - weight prospect for the future. His stylish Victory over mark hart at Harringay on Monday was an important event in British boxing annals. Cockell, a modest and steady follow, is married to a London girl, Irene, and has a two-year-old daughter, pat. His work as a blacksmith brings him in an average of £7 a week. He was paid £8 for his first professional fight, and against hart, he earned his highest purse, £150. Don first began boxing as an Army cadet and Oddly enough, he based his style on mark hart.
