War Has Started On the Colorado Beetle -- Dusting Machines *****. Each is capable of covering 40 acres per day.Land girls are helping the farmers in combating the Colorado Beetle menace. In the Essex area where these photograph were taken - Orsett and Tilbury - trained land girl 'socute' have been spying out the farms behind the long stretch of the Essex Coast. After the suspected area has been mapped, the dusting of the crop by a contractor is carried out, and afterwards an inspection of all potato fields before and after dusting in an endeavor to discover if any beetles are in fact present. In The Front Line Of ***** -- A duster-sprayer at work today in a potato field on a farm near Rochester, Kent. Beetles have recently been found in the Kent area. There are 4 of these sprayers at work in this area, and they are using 20 tons DDT per week.Many thousands of acres of potatoes ***** land on the South and East coast of ***** the scene of another "Invasion" battle ***** were in the wartime days. This time however, ***** is the colorado beetle, which is the worst threat to Britain's potato crops in ten years. Spraying and searching for the past is being intensified in areas where the beetle has been found recently, and a small army of farmers, officials, watchers and searchers are engaged in an all-out effort to beat the Continental threat to the crops.
