A "peg law" introduced by Edgar I, who ruled England from 959 to 975 AD, restricted drinkers to one portion of the contents. If they drank more they would be fined. 'The gentlemen of the 1st Newcastle Rifle Volunteer Corps have presented a testimonial to their late commander, Lieutenant-General Sir John Fife, whose ill-health has obliged him to retire. It was conveyed to him, with a suitable address, by Major Redmayne, Captains Smith and Doeg, and Quartermaster Lockerby. There were 200 subscribers to the testimonial; the gift was an elegant centre-piece, of Grecian design, from the establishment of Lister and Sons, Mosley-street, Newcastle.
