Italian Sketchbook Sanford Robinson Gifford (American, 1823-1880). Italian Sketchbook, 1867-1868. Graphite on tan, medium-weight, slightly textured wove paper, 5 x 9 x 7/16 in. (12.7 x 22.9 x 1.1 cm). This sketchbook served as a travel diary for the Hudson River School landscape painter Sanford Robinson Gifford during his journeys in France, Switzerland, and Italy. In this two-page spread depicting the church of Santa Caterina del Sasso, perched precariously on the edge of a cliff overlooking Lake Maggiore in Italy, Giffords precise and assured lines exemplify his skills as a draftsman. A practitioner of plein air sketching, the artist used these drawings as preparatory studies for paintings executed later in his studio. The small framed motifs that appear on this and other pages of the sketchbook show his initial experiments with composition. American Art 1867-1868

Anatomy Sketchbook Eastman Johnson (American, 1824-1906). Anatomy Sketchbook, 1849. Graphite on beige, medium weight, slightly textured laid paper, Sketchbook: 17 1/8 x 11 1/16 x 3/8 in. (43.5 x 28.1 x 1 cm). Eastman Johnson used this sketchbook while enrolled in an anatomy class at the Düsseldorf Royal Academy in Germany. The meticulous, almost scientific precision of his skeleton studies reveals the schools emphasis on draftsmanship and anatomical knowledge as fundamental tools for the artist. Many of the drawings include grids and other geometric guidelines, as well as notations about ideal proportions of the human body. Johnson parlayed his academic training into a successful career as a painter of American genre subjects. American Art 1849

Photo album with topographical images of the Netherlands, Bernard Eilers, 1915 Photo album with a total of 141 prints on 64 pages. The album was commissioned by the Staatsspoorwegen, on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of the Dutch Railways. Pictured are railways and images of castles and landscapes in the various Dutch provinces and some images of military exercises, partly attended by Queen Wilhelmina. The photographer is anonymous from 121 prints. 20 prints were made by various Dutch photographers, including Bernard Eilers and Richard Tepe. Travel album with sights in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Belgium, various manufacturers, c. 1899 scrapbook Photo album in the band of black Moroccine leather. The bracts have a marble motif. The album contains 50 sheets with gold on cut and 106 photos, 2 of which are loose on cardboard. They are mainly city and street views and mountain landscapes in Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Luxembourg and Belgium. All photos have handwritten captions, walking from July 27 to September 1899. These are probably references to the date on which the unknown album compassioner visited the places in question. In view of the Dutch -speaking captions and the place where the album was made (Brussels), this was probably a Flemish traveler.
